Re: 5/30 Gamecrap

Dunno who Brandon Crawford is, but he's capable of hitting lazy curves.

Re: 5/30 Gamecrap

This is why I could never be a pitching coach. Duncan went out there and calmly gave McClellan advice. I would have gone out there and said "Stop sucking, you asshole."

Seven runs to the worst offense in MLB.

Nice job, Mac.

Re: 5/30 Gamecrap

Walk the pitcher and then give up a grand slam to a midget who can't hit home runs out of his hand. That's a bold strategy.

Not defending MacClellan, but Torres did hit 16 HR last year. It's not like he gave up a grand slam to Miles.

When did Aaron Miles get traded to the Gaints?

A short handed bullpen is going to be an issue again.

Re: 5/30 Gamecrap

The game so far would be annoying enough on its own, but the people across the street are having a barbecue with about a dozen girls between the ages of 2-10 running through a sprinkler. You know that screeching sound little girls make about every five seconds? I've been listening to them for the last two hours and it's at the point right now every screech is finding the base of my spine and irritating every single one of my nerve endings.

Stop clouding my rants with statistics, will ya?

Batista the Nibbler throwing to a strike zone the size of a teacup. This ought to be interesting.

I know exactly the sound of which you speak. In an effort to save a little cash this year, we are letting the kids have sleep-over birthday parties this year. On June 18, my daughter will have from five to seven 7-8 year olds invading my house and spending the night. I'm sure they'll all go to bed early, right?

For my part, I was going to ask the wife if I could spend the night at the East Side Ballet, but I'm not optimistic.

Stay closer to second and you won't have to worry about being hit with a pickoff throw.

"I know exactly the sound of which you speak."

Thought you might. I'd rather have my eyelids stapled open and be subjected to an Oprah marathon than invite a half-dozen of them into my house.
These are the spoiled children of the queen from Duke and her dishrag of a husband who think they're the only people on the face of the Earth. I've gotten used to them parking directly behind my driveway so I have to execute a 9-point turn every morning. I've gotten used to him mowing his lawn every Saturday at 7 a.m. I've gotten used their middle kid standing in the middle of the street throwing his toys at the neighbor's old dog every time the poor dog is out on his tether. I've never gotten used to the two girls screeching, though.

That is a deep lineup.  Not that Descalso has disappointed but it would be pretty awesome with a real third baseman.

I just saw the comparison between Pujols and Brendan Ryan on stltoday.

Pujols
AVE .257 OPS .326 SLG .395

Ryan
AVE .277 OPS .350 SLG .348

Pujols
HITS 54 DOUBLES 5 RBI 28

Ryan
HITS 39 DOUBLES 8 RBI 16

I think you meant OBP, but the comparison is pretty stunning.  I was going to comment on this when I posted the link to the Mariners.  Ryan went on a tear and raised his BA to acceptable.  I wish him the best.

nothing that a timely injury can't fix.  what's boggs's availability?  who else do we have down there now?

Principles of Daughters

1) if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.  You should have given up on the game, Artie, and joined them running through the sprinkler.  You would have had the time of your life and become the "cool dad" of the neighborhood . . . provided you can maintain the proper decorum with underage girls.

2) sleep-overs for pre-teen girls are a piece of cake. we have them about 4-5 times per year.  before the girls arrive load up on pizza and videos (checking beforehand with other parents about any dietary restrictions or needs), lead them to the playroom.  about 8 pm make popcorn.  leave out some snacks before going to bed.  in the morning, wake at an ordinary time and prepare cinnamon rolls and orange juice.  after the girls are gone, tell your daughter that she must clean up the playroom and dining table, or else . . . no more sleepovers!

These people have pretty much alienated everyone on the street, Max. There have just been too many instances of selfishness and inconsideration.

They're re-booting Boggs in Memphis as a starter. I'm not sure why, unless they're going to try to trade someone in the rotation to address a need, which at this point would be bullpen or defense.

As far as what's down there, the closer is Victoe Marte. Todd hasn't pitched well since they re-acquired him.

that's a different story then.  i thought maybe you were being the grumpy old curmudgeon.

are they relatively new people on a block that has low turn-over?  or are they just unusually selfish and inconsiderate?

i know that being an expat, where turnover is high, no one stays around long enough to form cliques of old-timers.  but returning to the USA, it was very difficult to avoid stepping on the sensitivities of people and the social networks they had built up over years.  my wife is one of the nicest people on the planet, and is excellent at stepping daintily through each new situation with a smile on her face.  but i am this social clod who stomps through life pissing people off.  i think it will be my fate to need to move every 2-3 years, at least until i can afford a shack out somewhere near the unabomber's old place.

the way i read between the lines, boggs was getting a starter's workload, but not necessarily with the intention of using him in that role.  rather, to give him lots of opportunities to develop his pitches.  so, his availability to the mother ship really depends on when his last start was.  my hunch is that they will keep pushing batista in the role of long relief, but if he falters, that job might go to boggs.  and in any case, when the ryan franklin express finally runs of of gas, there's a chance that boggs comes back.  i didn't see his demotion as being a criticism of his performance, so much as it was necessitated by franklin's intransigence. then again, franklin's line yesterday wasn't horrible.  maybe it bought him a new lifeline.

"are they relatively new people on a block that has low turn-over?  or are they just unusually selfish and inconsiderate?"

They moved in about a year before we did.
I'll give you an example. We live in a neighborhood where most of the homes were built in the 1930s, and they all have those stone foundations, which means they leak, which means you'd better have a portable sump pump or a wet vac. I have both.
This guy comes over and asks if he can borrow the sump pump. I let him borrow it. About six months later, I call him on the phone and ask "Any chance I can get my sump pump back?"
"Sure. Come on over and get it any time you want."
So I go over a couple of days later to fetch the sump pump. His wife is the only adult home and tells me "I think it's in the basement. Check down there."
So I go in their basement. I find the sump pump, but I don't find the hose.
"There was a dedicated hose with this. Any idea where it might be?"
"Oh, we used that this summer with the sprinkler. I think it's still out back."
She's right. It's in the backyard, still attached to the spigot on one end and the sprinkler on the other. There are about five patches with duct tape that weren't there when I loaned it to them, and it's now winter so there's ice in the hose.
I gather everything up, give Sarah a wave and say "Thanks!"
"No problem!"

It's the way they are with everything. They've invited their friends to our house for Halloween. Their kids and their guests help themselves to pizza and beverages and they've never offered to pay for anything. We had to shut it down last year because we can't afford to run a soup kitchen for people who make half a million dollars a year between them.
