Let them die tonight gamecrap

OK, so the Reds' magic number is one, but the Team That Invented Baseball is off tonight. So if the Cardinals lose, Cinci clinches, not on the field, not even in their clubhouse, but with their sorry asses planted on their couches at home.

Re: Let them die tonight gamecrap

Well, it turned out I couldn't root against the Cardinals after all. Six games out with six games to play.
One-game playoff with the Reds on Oct. 4? Who's with me??

Apparently not Larussa.  I received an e-mail this morning asking to move our fantasy hockey draft back a night because Larussa scheduled the coaches meeting for the evening of the 4th.

"Larussa scheduled the coaches meeting for the evening of the 4th."

A'course. Beat the Reds in the afternoon and then meet to discuss the playoff rotation. Makes perfect sense.

Your buddy ought to ask La Russa to move the coaches' meeting so it doesn't conflict with your fantasy draft. See how that goes over.

What coaches are in your league?

Wandy's in trouble in Cinci. Bases loaded, no outs.

The game in Cinci isn't even sold out. And RedFan is cheering for foul balls that travel 250 feet like they're home runs off the bat. Morons.

Re: Let them die tonight gamecrap

Willie Mays Gomes pops out, Phillips gets a shitty infield single to tie the game and then Bruuuuuuce grounds into an DP. 2-2 going into the 7th. Could have been worse. A lot worse.

Just Chad.

Weinberg is also in the league, but I'm not sure that he attends the coaches meeting.

Just received a new e-mail.  Despite my passing along Artie's advice, the coaches meeting is still scheduled for Monday evening.  The fantasy hockey draft has been moved to Tuesday night.  However, that presented a problem because we were holding the draft at a friend's restaurant which is closed on Monday night.  As a trade-off, Chad spoke to Larussa and we're holding the draft in the meeting room adjacent to the Cardinal clubhouse.

Start hoarding any extra cash you may have for bond money.  Come Wednesday, if you see a headline that reads something to the effect of "Drunken man arrested at Busch Stadium trying to deficate on Bill DeWitt's desk," please help a brother out.

Barry's OK, but we all call him "Big League Barry."  He's one of those guys who really digs himself and isn't ashamed to introduce himself as "Barry Weinberg, trainer for the St. Louis Cardinals."  But, he fully acknowledges that he does it, and takes all the ribbing that people give him when they call him on it.

He doesn't seem to know a thing about hockey, but for at least one night a year he agrees to hang out with a bunch of peasants like us.  I guess that makes him OK in some sense.  Or a glutton for punishment.

"we're holding the draft in the meeting room adjacent to the Cardinal clubhouse."

I don't know how you'll be able to concentrate on a fantasy hockey draft in such close proximity to Aaron Miles' aura.

At the risk of a breaking and entering charge, I just have to get you a picture of AAAaron Miles' locker.   (grin) (grin) (grin)

I was going to start introducing myself as "Artie Fufkin, defensive coordinator of the Marblehead Youth Football JV-C Headers," but it probably won't resonate as well.

Am I reading this correctly?  Is your team really the "Marblehead Headers?"

Yep. If I had religion I'd tell you the god's honest truth is the first time I ever saw my wife, it was the first semester she was in college and she was wearing a sweatshirt that had the term "Headers" emblazoned across the front. The natives have grown up with the term, so the first time they're out on their own they have no idea why people point and laugh at them. And no sense of humor about it when they figure out why.
The high school changed its mascot to the "Magicians" awhile back when the double entendre became too common to ignore, but the locals still refer to themselves as "Headers." And the purists believe in order to be a bona fide Header, you have to have been born in the hospital in town that closed about 50 years ago, so the species is becoming extinct.
As you might imagine, I tend to have a little bit of fun with the term, especially since there's an implicit air of superiority about the whole thing.
Then there's the discussion about the stuffy trust fund faction who go out of their way to tell you without a hint of irony they live in the multi-million dollar family estate on the oxymoronically-named "Marblehead Neck," but I'm throwing a lot at you all at once here.
