Cardinals outfielder Lance Berkman, who's been dealing with a right wrist injury after diving for a ball on May 18, received a cortisone shot Saturday night and will not play today.
The Cardinals are off Monday and Berkman's status for Tuesday's game in Houston will be determined later.
The club took into account Monday's day off and Berkman's history against Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano while making the decision to have the shot. Berkman is 11-for-71 (.155) in his career vs. Zambrano.
Meanwhile, Colby Rasmus has been made a late scratch after initially being penciled in as the cleanup hitter today. The word from the Cardinals manager is that Rasmus could use a rest.
"I know that he's on fumes and we don't have to do that," Tony La Russa said.
Rasmus is available today.
Allen Craig and Skip Schumaker will replace Berkman and Rasmus in the lineup, moving Jon Jay to centerfield.
With all the shuffling, La Russa went through a couple lineup cards, and what he ended up with still had a bizarre look. Matt Carpenter, who was 1-for-5 in his big-league debut Saturday, will move up to the No. 2 hole and Jay will bat clean-up.
"This is a lineup you've got to be prepared to explain to your owner, general manager, fans ...," La Russa said.
Here is the revised lineup:
Cardinals
Theriot, SS
Carpenter, 3B
Pujols, 1B
Jay, CF
Craig, LF
Schumaker, RF
Molina, C
Descalso, 2B
Carpenter, P

A normal manager would have batter Jay second and put Craig cleanup. I dont know why he would put Matt Carpenter in the second slot.
It is a good thing Garcia wasnt on the mound today or this lineup wouldnt have worked.

Series is in the bag. Off day Monday. Cubs have become irrelevant.
Can't say this lineup completely shocks me. If Pujols hadn't suddenly got hot, he probably gets today off as well.

I still would have batted Craig cleanup. I understand sitting Rasmus and Berkman. If they are hurt or worn down today is a good day to sit them. I think this lineup can still win today. Zambrano splits are worst against left handed batters. More so this year then others but Craig is more of a cleanup hitter then Jay.

Perhaps, but Jon Jay is god.

He's A god. He's not THE god. THE God probably looks like Ted Nugent.

Carp headed for another complete game loss.

Cool stat from Al. Gibson had 251 wins and 255 complete games.
It was a different era back then. That's the way I remember baseball when I was young. 20 game losers were not unheard of. That might make a way to mark the changing of the era, when was the last 20 game loser?

Why is Theriot so far behind these 91 mph pitches?

Theriot gets ahead of one!!!

Cement-head lost 18 in 2005 and 17 in 2007.

after he touched home plate, yes. before that . . . i almost posted and then decided not to, that his admiration of his home run *looked* almost bonds-esque. hopefully he was caught up in the moment and that doesn't become habit.

Is it still fashionable to say "what's wrong with Chris Carpenter?"

Of course the downside of this happening now, in this fashion, is that it will stoke belief in Wrigleyville that Albert is worth $300/10.

Maybe. On the other hand, did you see anything this weekend from the Cubs that suggests they're close enough to being contenders to stoke Pujols' interest?
That's a bad team. A really bad team. I don't follow minor league baseball well enough to know if they have a wave of talent on the horizon, but right now that Cubs team is as bad as any they've had in quite a while. And that's saying something.
Pujols doesn't strike me as someone who is simply going to chase money. I think he likes having an opportunity to win. If you believe that the case, the Cubs may be playing themselves out of the Pujols race.

I think that the offer would make him feel vindicated, but that he will pull a Cliff Lee and go where it is he wants to go. But, in any case, having an offer like that helps when negotiating with other teams.

Pujols has been doing that but FSN doesnt show it much. The last two walkoffs he has stood with his bat extended as he watches the ball. A walkoff HR is pretty exciting so I will excuses him of those.
With the pic thing it there was to be a jp or another lettering I cant think of right now on the end of the link for it to work.

The have alot of money coming off the books but it is going to take alot of money to replace those players with new one of any talent level. They have to replace starters at 3rd, 1st and CF and do so with player at least as good as the ones they have to just keep from getting any worst. If you look at the free agent list you will see it isnt going to be an easy task to replace Fukudome, Ramirez and Pena with 3 players of equal value for much less then what they are paying now. That doesnt even take into the account that Zambrno will be making 33 million and not be any better then they are today. I agree with Fors that Chicago isnt to inviting.
