"David Freese (hand) hit off a tee Monday and is expected to progress to soft-toss later this week.
Freese told B.J. Rains of FOX Sports Midwest that he is "feeling really good." The third baseman expects to head out on a rehab assignment in mid-June before hopefully returning by the end of the month. He's been out since May 1 with a fractured hand"
Hopefully we can expect Freese back in three weeks.

that would be amazing if it happened. for some reason i was thinking august.

It's been five weeks now, and when it happened they were talking as many as 12 weeks, so you weren't far off. Getting him back would be huge, though. Getting Punto back would be huge.

Emphasis on "hopefully."

Hopefully he doesnt have another season ending injury during a rehab start.

Things like that can happen when you think you're made of glass.

What was George Carlin's bit on unexpected combinations of words that have never been said before?

Punto saves us from Schumaker's defense and ever having to see Tyler Greene. And also gives La Russa an excuse to sit Theriot.

Nothing short of a season ending injury will save us from seeing skip take a majority of the starts at second.
When Punto and Freese come back TLR really has no reason to play Craig at second. that will dissappoint me.

not exactly huge, imo, but i can see how you might view it as a bonus.
i think like AP, that Schu will still get a lot of work this season, and that the return of Punto will make it more challenging to find playing time for both he and Craig. Playing a solid veteran who can't hit, versus a rookie with a mighty bat . . . damn, it will be like Sophie's Choice for La Russa.
and FWIW, I don't think we should give up on Greene just yet.

so who gets sent back to memphis? who's even on the 25 man roster these days? forgetting about whoever took Holliday's place, if they bring back freese and punto, the candidates for a bus trip back to memphis might be descalso and greene. i don't think there will be much angst over sending greene back, although at the very minimum the team will miss having him as a pinch runner, but i think there will be some hand-wringing before ultimately sending back a guy who has contributed as much as descalso.

Current bench players include Matt Carpenter and Hamilton. Descalso is safe.
If they're fully healthy, the bench would be Punto, Descalso, Craig, Jay and Laird.

Punto's bat was coming around when he got hurt, and the hits he got were clutch. He's never going to give you 15 homers and 80 RBI, but his versatility and defense make him a valuable commodity on a LaRussa team.

Yeah, I'd take Punto over Schumaker full-time. His defense really impressed me.

I'm not saying he doesn't. I am agreeing with AP that Punto's return looks to cut into Craig's playing time, and that creates an interesting choice for La Russa.

No doubt about it. Plus Skip isnt giving them anything at the plate that Punto couldnt.

I am not going to get to carried away with Craig at second yet but he seems as good as Skip is. I like his bat in the lineup. So far playing time hasnt been an issue. Injuries have opened up alot and Craig as fallen now. I would like to see the lineup of:
Theriot
Craig
Pujols
Holliday
Berkman
Rasmus
Freese
Molina
Pitcher
once before the season is over.

Freese is cleared for batting practice, but it sounds like he's still a week or so away from going on a rehab assignment.
Assuming he doesn't get speared by a rhino or anything.

Freeze said he expects to return one week from Monday.

Again, excepting the thing with the rhino?
