Re: 6/14 Gamecrap

I can't believe they're letting this one get away.

Re: 6/14 Gamecrap

Well, I can't remember a worse half-inning than that one.

Re: 6/14 Gamecrap

"How many fucking first batter walks has he issued this year?"

It didn't even take him that long. He plunked Bernadina, the guy he was brought in to get out.

Re: 6/14 Gamecrap

This is so bad. Not only have they coughed up an insurmountable lead, they've left the game in the hands of the only two guys in Washington's bullpen who can pitch.

Even better. I'm following the box score on my Blackberry and saw 0 IP, 1 BB. HBP, BB, WP is even better.

Honestly, he's been worse than Franklin this year.

Re: 6/14 Gamecrap

OK, if the third strike to Jay is a strike, then the 2-2 pitch to Nix is a strike.

Putting the tying run on? Interesting ...

Re: 6/14 Gamecrap

I try not to let baseball games upset me, because they're baseball games, but it's hard to not be annoyed by this one.

Re: 6/14 Gamecrap

It's hard not to be annoyed that we are nearing the 70-game mark and the manager is playing games with the roster still. If they miss the playoffs because they can't admit they were wrong about Batista and couldn't "betray" Franklin, then La Russa deserves his walking papers for good.

at the risk of destroying an elegant theory with an ugly fact, I believe it is the GM that controls the roster.  La Russa probably plays a large roll relative to some managers, but unless I'm mistaken it requires a decision from Mozeliak to move a player up or down, on or off the roster.

I'd say his role his quite large.

It's not really a 'theory' that La Russa is not going to ax Franklin or that they'll stand by Batista because he was their guy coming out of Jupiter. Under La Russa, the Cardinals will not just let someone go unless they become a distraction. Franklin has enough La Russa Bucks saved up to the point that he's safe, regardless of performance.

All managers have their "guys" so it's not like this is exclusive to La Russa, but he takes it to the extreme sometimes. Franklin, Batista, Schumaker/Theriot...that's just pushing it.

Re: 6/14 Gamecrap

I'm not disputing your contention that La Russa has a lot of influence, more than most managers.  Nor that Franklin should have been moved off the active roster a while ago.  His return to effectiveness was limited to a brief three scoreless outings and followed by 4 outings where his ERA has gone up, even though it was already over 7!!!

My point is that when the chickens come home to roost, the GM is responsible for the roster and will rightly take the blame.

FWIW: I believe Batista is still a judgement call.  He has one of the better BAAs on the staff, but his 17 BBs in 28 IP are killing him.  Now you can make the case that if he weren't nibbling away and walking guys that more batters would have smacked the crap out his pitches, and that's a fair argument.  But he still throws at 94 mph, or was last time I saw, and I would argue that it's hard to say how badly we need to get rid of him until Franklin agrees to an extended trip to the DL and we get Boggs back.  Ooops, I see we just got him back in exchange for Lynn, but that probably means they want him to start.

Anyhoo, I don't see a ticket out of town for Batista any time soon, leastways not before Franklin.
