If the Mets are gonna have a fire sale, would they let Santana go and would anyone want him, given his shoulder and contract?

Last I heard, which was at the beginning of the season, was that he could be available on or around Aug. 1.
You'd have to commit $50 million over the next two years, plus with his no-trade clause he'd probably insist on whoever deals for him pick up his $25 million option for 2014.
Does that seem like something DeWallet would even remotely consider?

No, but what if the Reds go for it?  Or the Cubs prepare for next year?

We're operating in a brand new NLC, where a team like the Brewers will go out and rent Sabathia just to make the playoffs.  What we don't get, someone one else might.  The Brewers getting K-Rod, basically for the price of his buyout, makes it just that much more difficult for us to pull away from those guys.

I'm not sure whether this means what if those teams target Santana or what if those teams start making other moves.  Personally, I wouldn't touch Santana, and doubt that any team would be willing to do so either, unless the Mets picked up almost all of the salary.

Pitchers don't tend to recover from shoulder surgeries like they do from elbow issues.  Carpenter is about the only one that comes to mind.  But look at guys like Mark Prior, Mark Mulder and Brandon Webb.
