Sounds like it was just a salary dump by the Mets.
Let the trades begin.
Per ESPN, K-Rod has a clause that his 2012 option worth $17M vests if he finishes 55 games this season. Milwaukee may have to make him the set-up guy. They can't afford to pay that kind of money.

It is hard to judge PTBNL trades. KRod is due 11.5 million this year and 3.5 million buyout next year. If the Brewers dont buy him out it is 17.5 million to keep him. That is a really bad contract.

Brewers strike first. This isn't good for the Cardinals hopes to win the NLC.

I agree that KRod makes them better but the contract is so bad that I wouldnt have wanted the Cardinals to get him. The Brewers will likely have to pay him 5.5million this year and 3.5 next year. That is a lot.
Edit: never mind. the Mets sent 5 million to the Brewers to cover most of KRods contract.

I wonder if the Mets let Izzy close. He so deperately tried to get to 300 saves when he was last here. This could be his chance.

That would be really cool to see. Izzy is having a pretty good year but he has 3 blown saves so far this season and no saves.

Good move by the Brewers. Nathan Axford Forrest's tires were beginning to show some wear.

"That is a really bad contract."
Have the Mets ever gotten a bargain on a free agent signing? Tom Glavine is the only one who comes to mind right away who came close to giving them what they expected, but they usually end up paying way more than they should.

They have to pay Jason Bay 16 million in 2012 and 2013. Then they have to buyout 2014 for 3 million.

I think the Mets are still paying Roger Cedeno.

I remember a lot of people thought we should have signed Bay rather than Holliday because Bay wasn't demanding as long of a contract and people thought Holliday was a product of Coors Field.

I know Bay was hurt last year but he is on pace of a 12 HR 60 RBI season in 2011. That is a far cry from the 36 HR and 119 RBIs he had with the Red Sox's in 09.

I can't help but think the Brewers are painting themselves into a corner. Flags fly forever and all that, but they're going to wind up using K-Rod enough where his option kicks in. For the prospects they've given up and the cash they might be committing to an overrated reliever in 2012, they better make the playoffs.

They've already said Axford remains the closer and K-rod is the 8th inning guy most of the time.

It's a good start, if the Cards can't successfully counter, and this might not be the end for them.

Correct. I was under the impression that Rodriguez only had to appear in 55 games, not just finish them. In fact, that's why I thought this was such a poor deal for Milwaukee. Now I can't figure out why the Cardinals weren't in on him.

Good deal for the Brewers, they kick in an extra $500k and are now free to use K-Rod in whatever role they choose, including closer.
