Goold:
NEW YORK -- With their offense wheezing since returning from the All-Star break, the Cardinals have been tied in knots by starters and tonight get the ill-timed task of facing a knuckleballer.
They will also be without Albert Pujols.
Whether these two events are connected will have to wait until we're permitted into the clubhouse and have a chance to ask. For now, the lineup has Lance Berkman taking over at first base for the day and Matt Holliday sliding up to No. 3 in the order. The shuffle also allows for Colby Rasmus to return to the lineup, cast in an RBI spot against the knuckler R. A. Dickey.
Here is the (corrected) lineup for the Cardinals game tonight against the Mets, with the pitcher sliding back to the No. 9 spot after the Crazy 8 lineup worked well (lucky, but well) on Tuesday at Citi Field:
1. Skip Schumaker, 2B
2. Jon Jay, RF
3. Matt Holliday, LF
4. Lance Berkman, 1B
5. David Freese, 3B
6. Colby Rasmus, CF
7. Gerald Laird, C
8. Daniel Descalso, SS
9. Kyle McClellan, P
Correction: The original lineup posted here had Ryan Theriot leading off. Theriot is not starting tonight, per the lineup card posted in the clubhouse. I apologize for the confusion.

Knuckleballers suck, BTW.

I think I might watch later. Maybe the knuckleballer will be out by then. Watching one is like watching a bad slow pitch softball game.

Nothing worth watching yet. Beltran just hit a two-run homer to the upper deck, allowing the Mets to tie things up after being down 4 - zip.

Is anyone else watching on SNY? These guys are pretty cool. They're in the right upper deck, not far from where Beltran's homer landed. So now they're interviewing the guy who got the ball, and autographing the ball for him.

Genius!!!!

Defense and bullpen. Stop me if you've heard this one before.
The only issue now is who gets the loss.

Artie, I think it's time for a:
WHO THE HELL KIDNAPPED ISRINGHAUSEN AND WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO WITH HIM?

Izzy looks pretty good.

Nevermind, that's Izzy.

Salas: THROW STRIKES

FUCK!
The best reason I can think of to keep this team in the playoff chase, is because they are as shitty and as frustrating as the 2006 team.

This team is just an absolute mess.
Oh well. At least McClellan competed.

Anyone else think the position players are going to just rise up en masse one of these days and beat the shit out of the bullpen?

I have a theory about Izzy, but I'm too annoyed to write about it now.

Max, if at any time in the future you choose to comment on someone admiring a home run, please keep that "look at me" demonstration we just saw from Angel Pagan in the back of your mind for a point of reference.
I'd fire a fastball right at that fuck-stick's head tomorrow, and I'd thump my chest, blow kisses at the crowd and point to the heavens after I did it.

Be fair, Fors. He was writing his Hall of Fame induction speech as he was circling the bases.

Seriously. I had something written about Pagan but I deleted it because I sometimes think I take these things too personally.

McCellan didnt lose this game. At some point this lineup needs to act like there are three hall of famers in it.

I dont understand how you can let Pagan hit the ball out of the ballpark.

He's gotta be better than six innings and four runs.
Miggy Batista gave up six runs for the Mets' AAA team tonight. It pisses me off just thinking how they employed that knucklehead.

If Fors were to be fair, he'd go back and re-read the original post. It really wasn't much of anything, just a teensy weensy observation that he objected to. And the far bigger issue was the debate that followed.
But for whatever reason, the Card are making the Mets feel about ten feet tall, and this sucks.
