So you are saying dealing Pujols and resigning him as a free agent is an option?
It's an option, but I think if they deal him, there would have to be an extension involved. Since Albert has said he won't negotiate until after the season, that complicates things, but I think if they trade him, they're essentially cutting the Gordian knot.

They can't trade Pujols without his permission. He's got 10 & 5 protection. I thought he said he'd veto any trade.

SERIOUSLY?! He's got to be kidding! Trade Pujols for Izzy?It doesn't make sense because the Mets are selling, and the Cardinals are buying, but if Moz picks up the phone and the Mets are willing to offer, say, Reyes, Izzy, and Parnell and/or Niese for two months of Pujols, then I'd listen.
Then that ~$25 million you were going to pay Pujols for the next 7-8 years can go a long way in other directions.
and, you could sign Pujols again in November.

BTW - what happened to the emoticons?
After Fors repeatedly made fun of me with them, I asked AP's mom to make him stop. And now it's more fiar for everyone.
Speaking Pujols poor performance, Bernie had a stat a week or so back that since about June 2(?) 10(?) Pujols is hitting above his career average in most/all indicators.

When do you pass papers?

pass papers? don't know what that means. but we have closed and we are the proud owners of a 10 year mortgage, if that's what you mean.

"Mozeliak indicated a belief that "baby steps can still help us" if a lock-down reliever or a significant starting pitcher can't be acquired. Yet Rasmus' increasingly obvious availability creates potential for a broader deal.
A potential match with the White Sox and perhaps a third team in a deal involving Rasmus appears less likely, though the Cardinals remain among those in play for White Sox pending free agent starting pitcher Edwin Jackson.
The Orioles are expected to trade starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie, who has attracted persistent interest from the Cardinals.
The Nationals, who have significant leverage to deal relief pitching and may listen on shortstop Ian Desmond, remain on the Cardinals.
The Giants seek offensive help to augment a strong pitching core. Their interest in New York Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran is well known but they may also view Astros All-Star outfielder Hunter Pence or Rasmus as a fallback.

"With the trade market experiencing only a minor temblor Tuesday,"
Jonny Gomes will be offended.

I'm sure someone can (has) calculated the mathmatical improbability of this, but how is it possible for a major league team to lose 17 straight games?
On the bright side, at 8-9, Felix Hernandez isn't far off of his 2010 Cy Young pace.

The trade Strauss spoke of with the White Sox is a bad one IMO. I would take the Jeremy Guthrie or Ian Desmond (depending on pitchers involved) if the club is convinced they have to get rid of Rasmus.

Oh God. In an example of 'be careful what you wish for', after just posting that I hoped that the Cardinals were not yet done, I read this:
Cardinals re-enter market eyeing a shortstop
"As part of their search for an upgrade at shortstop, the Cardinals have had ongoing discussions with the Los Angeles Dodgers about switch-hitter Rafael Furcal, a baseball source confirmed to The Post-Dispatch."
I hope this is a misdirection, and their actual target will provide 'legitimate help'.

I dont know enough to judge but I wonder what kind of player the Cardinals would have had to include to matched this deal?
"SEATTLE (AP)—Dave Dombrowski and the Detroit Tigers hope they’ve grabbed the pieces to round out a playoff pitching staff. The Seattle Mariners just keep searching for the right pieces in their rebuilding efforts.
The Mariners shipped right-handed starter Doug Fister(notes) and righty reliever David Pauley(notes) to the Tigers on Saturday morning for outfielder Casper Wells(notes), infielder Francisco Martinez, left-hander Charlie Furbush(notes) and a player to be named later.

Who knows, considering the Mariners just traded two guys who, collectively, are making under $900k? How can they even call that a rebuilding move??? If anything they added payroll. The Mariners are an enigma.

You have something against Furcal? When healthy, he's been pretty productive and he's a significant upgrade defensively.

He is having a shitty year and July was his worst month and his largest sample size.

I just check the Post Dispatch and a story from earlier today leads you to believe the Furcal deal is more or less done. I dont see a point in trading for him. I know with Punto out for a couple weeks with an injury that is hard to get rid of the team feels a need for depth. Greene offers more then Furcal does right now. He is really sucking.

"Furcal, a switch-hitter, is struggling through career lows this season with a .195 batting average and a .241 slugging percentage in 36 games (133 at-bats). His production has picked up recently as he distances himself from an oblique strain and his second stint on the disabled list this season. Furcal, 33, is batting .310 during his previous eight games, and he has seven hits in his previous 18 at-bats over four games.
"The Cardinals would likely receive cash in the deal and send back what's been described as a lower-tier prospect."

I still don't think this gets them near the Phillies or Giants, but if they're going "all in" for this year, this move makes sense. I can see Furcal rejuvinated by a pennant run. Sounds like they're giving up nothing and LA is going to pay most of Furcal's remaining salary.
Sorry, I've seen enough of Tyler Greene.
Oh, and did I mention that Furcal's shitty July is better than Theriot's.

Your splitting hairs on the Theriot vs Furcal sucky july thing. Both had really shitty months. IDK if you improve by getting a guy who is slightly less shitty. If his glove is better then that might help. Another thing is that Theriot is having a bad month. Furcal is having a bad year. Of course if Furcal turns back the clock he can be usefull but as Cardinals fans we have been through this before. Signing a player and expecting of them to get better just because they are a Cardinal. Whatever ones opinion is on the Furcal trade is fine. It is likely to be a non-issue. He will remain a fill in while the Cardinals test him out. The roster will absorb him at the Sept roster expansion and if the Cardinals make the playoffs people will be left out.

If I were a ballpark music guy and 6-5 / 215 Charlie Furbush ever came up to bat, I'd play "A Boy Named Sue". Then I'd probably lay low for a while.
