It's important that Westbrook doesn't suck tonight.

Jay wearing #19. I assume in anticipation of The Drunk's arrival.

You can't walk Koyie Hill there. You just can't.

Whew. Now we can finally talk about the five plus perfect innings.

And one incredibly imperfect inning.

59 more regular season days until Ryan Theriout is no longer a Cardinal.

I don't think I've ever seen a team so far out of first place so pleased with itself for not getting swept.

maybe . . . , but at this point--with Furcal, Schu, Descalso, Punto, and Craig--is there any good reason not to release him, hope someone else claims him up and pays his salary?

IMO, no. But I don't think we get that lucky.

The Cardinals aren't going to release Theriot and nobody is going to claim him. The only way he winds up with another team is if he's DFA'd, passes through waivers and signs for the minimum elsewhere. But, they wouldn't do that because he's one of the core guys.

But it would demonstrate to the world that Tony doesn't keep guys around just because he likes them.

I think the important distinction may be that Tone doesn't feel he needs to refute this "positive" facet of his style; he seems more concerned about the flip side (that he makes and punishes enemies). If that's true, he may perceive himself as more participative and less authoritarian than he is... or he may perceive that his public image is skewed unfairly the other way. Is there a psychologist in the house?
Holy crap, Max; you're rubbing off on me.

I think what JV is trying to say is perhaps Larussa doesn't care about your half-baked conspiracy theories about why roster moves are made.

i'm sure he doesn't. i wouldn't be offended if he doesn't even know about them.
(but, for accuracy sake, it's hardly a conspiracy theory to peer into one person's motivations and make hypotheses about them).

If you want to get technical, a conspiracy is commonly defined as a meeting of the minds between two or more people to bring about improper or illegal conduct. Since the roster move you describe (dumping Theriot to benefit Larussa's image) would require Mozeliak's compliance--as GM he's ultimately responsible for roster moves--the term conspiracy fits.

Interesting snippet from the P-D about the Cardinals' view of last night's umpiring. I thought the pitch to Pena was a strike (K-zone seemed to confirm it was right on the edge and it would have been tough to fault the umpire's call either way).
I thought it was interesting that the umpires confirmed that the call earlier this week on the Pujols "home run" was incorrect and acknowledged that the ball Freese hit last night, which was ruled a double, was basically the exact same play.

I did too, but LaRussa is full of crap about that call costing the Cardinals the game. The umpire didn't walk Koyie Hill and his robust .211 batting average with no one on base earlier in the inning, he didn't throw a pitch right down the middle to Castro, and he didn't bounce the ensuing 3-2 pitch to Pena in the dirt.
And that's just on the defensive side. You can't put guys on first and second to open an inning and not score, even if the lead runner is Yadier Molina. You just can't.
