Who took the last piece of cake?

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa held a closed-door meeting covering several topics before his team began its pregame drills Thursday night.

One of the issues was the five-game suspension handed down to catcher Yadier Molina for a beef he had with umpire Rob Drake a couple of days before in Milwaukee.

Another touched on an animated argument catchers Gerald Laird and Molina got into at the team hotel, the Ritz Carlton in Fort Lauderdale, Beach, Fla., late Wednesday night after the club's late arrival from Milwaukee.

No punches were reported to have been thrown in the dispute, which quickly was mediated by teammate Albert Pujols.

"It was a long hot day," said La Russa, referencing the conditions for Wednesday's 10-5 loss at Milwaukee. "And when you talk about a long, hot day, there's frustration. But there wasn't anything. They hugged each other. They're friends.

"It's just one of those things that happens. It's a long trip. There was no fight. They just got into an argument a little bit."

Laird, who played for the suspended Molina and went hitless in four at-bats Thursday, said: "It was just a disagreement. Long day. It's a long year. When you spend a lot of time with these guys, obviously you're going to have disagreements.

"Two guys disagreeing about something and that's about it. We're friends. We get along real well."

I think you may have figured this one out, AP. With those two involved, there's a high degree of probability refreshments were involved.

Either that or Laird refused to lick the underside of an airplane tray during the flight to Florida.

Interesting.  Written by Hummel, but otherwise looks like a Strauss story.

My hunch is this is bigger than what is being reported.  This has all the hallmarks of a professional PR campaign designed to get out in front of a controversy.  Not clear yet how much bigger.

Strauss isn't traveling with the team during this roadtrip.

I'm sure the altercation was "interesting," but I suspect this sort of thing happens from time to time without ever being repotred.  I doubt it's that big of a deal, other than the fact that it was made public.

OK, so let me rephrase.  If this were a Strauss piece, then I would have a strong hunch that it was bigger than being reported.

It happend at the hotel so I am guessing the public had knowledge of it.  That might be why we heard of it.  It is hard to think it didnt have something to do with Molina's vacation.  I agree that this might be common but it makes you wonder about the clubhouse drama.

No doubt. I'm surpised we don't hear about more stuff like this. These guys are all competitive and have huge egos. Off the top of my head, I've probably known a half-dozen sociopaths, and all but one of them are guys with whom I've played baseball. Guys who will just punch you in the mouth as soon as say hi to you. And these guys have to live with each other for half the year. Eruptions are bound to occur.
As an aside, the only non-baseball related psycho was the younger brother of a girl I dated in college for about a month. He told me that if I ever did anything harmful to her, he'd smash in my head with a shovel. I was about six inches taller and 75 pounds heavier so I dismissed it as an idle threat, but a couple of years later he ended up in prison after he nearly killed a guy in what would be known now as a road rage incident.
