Oregon Ducks quest for greatness Part II

Welcome to the Pac 12! Leading off the season is an incredible top 5 matchup with LSU that is at a neutral site (Cowboys Stadium in Arlington Texas). Games with Nevada and Missouri State finish out the out-of-conference schedule. Then it's time to run the gauntlet. There is a road contest with Stanford that will surely test the Ducks, followed by the annual contest with USC! In addition to this, success will likely carry another important ranked contest for the Pac 12 title, should Oregon be deserving of such, and then a Bowl.

Sat, Sep 3 at (4) LSU 8:00 pm
Sat, Sep 10 Nevada 3:30 pm
Sat, Sep 17 Missouri State 3:30 pm
Sat, Sep 24 at Arizona 10:15 pm
Thu, Oct 6 California 9:00 pm
Sat, Oct 15 Arizona State TBA
Sat, Oct 22 at Colorado TBA
Sat, Oct 29 Washington State TBA
Sat, Nov 5 at Washington TBA
Sat, Nov 12 at (7) Stanford TBA
Sat, Nov 19 (25) USC 8:00 pm
Sat, Nov 26 Oregon State TBA

First things first however, LSU.

Oregon lost a few strong pieces to the club (Maehl, Paysinger), but did keep a lot of the really skilled players. Thomas and James are both back and according to all reports, in good health. LSU just lost the projected starting QB to a felony assault arrest and suspension. I would still expect LSU to bring that SEC caliber defense and present a strong challenge. If Oregon is the real deal, they win this on a neutral location by 7. If they are pretenders, we'll get to know it early, and I won't be spamming you all season with chirps (er quacks).

Lets do it Oregon!

Re: Oregon Ducks quest for greatness Part II

Should be an interesting season. The best two teams in the conference are in the North division, and the best team in the South can't play in the championship game. That's led to a lot of optimism in Tempe this fall, and the fate of the season could be determined when Mizzou comes to town a week from Friday.

Why do the Duck gather such a following?

In-state, it's probably because of location. Eugene is a decent-sized city, and Corvallis is in a rural area. And Oregon has had more success in football. I don't think OSU has been to the Rose Bowl since the '60s, even though they've had some pretty good teams (including the 2000 version that waxed Notre Dame by about 40 points in the Fiesta Bowl.)

But you live near to other ocean?

"But you live near to other ocean?"

True, but I went to one of the original Pac 10 schools for a year.
If I had my way, I would have gone to USC, because the Trojans were my favorite college football team when I was a kid. Any lingering affinity I had for USC football ended when Lane Kiffin got there.
To me, Kiffin is to college football what Rick Pitino is to basketball.

And that answers that question early. Darren Thomas looked like he'd never seen a football before, and we gave them 4 turnovers for over half their total score.

Ah well, it was a good run!

My only mildly negative thought about LSU is I wish JaMarcus Russell had been eaten by Mike the Tiger before the Raiders drafted him.

Nothing to be mild about , many wish he had been eaten by Mike before he left . A thug is a thug is a thug .

ASU @ Oregon next week. LaMichael James dislocated his elbow in the 4th quarter of the Cal game. Hopefully he will not need surgery to fix it, that's a huge blow for us.

If the Sun Devils play as poorly as they did last week, they won't get by Utah.

they are close enough that we get their reports as 'local news', along with all the Washington teams.  I just heard about this on KOMO radio:

"If the clock is ticking on the LaMichael James Watch, then circle Nov. 12 on the calendar for the Oregon running back’s return from a dislocated elbow in the Ducks’ 43-15 victory over California.

James, the nation’s current leading rusher, said after Thursday’s game that he popped the elbow back into place. His arm was in a sling, and X-rays were negative for any breaks."

"he popped the elbow back into place"

Ever dislocated anything? It hurts more when it's out than when you pop it back in.

Re: Oregon Ducks quest for greatness Part II

dislocating a finger hurts bad enough... I cannot even imagine a shoulder, elbow, ankle or knee....

Well we can hopefully get by with Barner for a while. We'll need James back for Stanford though.

APRTW: The Oregon Ducks football team is literally the pride of the state. Oregon has very little in the way of meaningful athletics (JailBlazers, who I love.... bail be damned). It's pretty unique in that sense. It's kind of the same reason why everyone in Nebraska is a Cornhusker fan. That's the pinnacle of their sports.

Defintely. It's a shame what amounts to the Pac 12 title game is being played during the regular season. Oregon and Stanford are the two best teams, probably followed by Warshington.

And I'm disappointed I won't get to watch Stoops Face anymore when UofA loses. Maybe he can get a job at a nice junior college.

Re: Oregon Ducks quest for greatness Part II

ASU played us really tough, they faded towards the end, but in Oregon? That was a very good showing. I had no idea if we'd be able to win until very late in the game...

James needs to come back quickly... Barner is not James.

We went to a Bar Mitzvah and didn't get home until after midnight, so I missed most of the game and the part I did see I can't remember because I was shit-faced.

Re: Oregon Ducks quest for greatness Part II

Things working out well. Wisconsin took a loss, and Oklahoma is fucking hurting.

That could bump them to 7 on Monday, still having LSU/Alabama and Oregon/Stanford! That would put them up around 5.

Go Ducks!

Re: Oregon Ducks quest for greatness Part II

Well the season is winding down, and Oregon needs a letdown from Oklahoma State and possibly Alabama.

The latter however might be wiped off the boards, due to Oregon having 2 games against USC (1 this week, then the Pac 12 Championship), who is ranked 18.

Oregon's pedigree for a National title?

1-loss to what is now the best team in the land. 27-40 on a "neutral" location dominated by LSU fans (Texas).
23 point victory over #4 Stanford.
14 Point victory over #18 Arizona State
?? against #18 USC

?? Pac 12 title game against #?? USC

This is not enough to trump a perfect Oklahoma State squad, but would be enough to potentially bounce Alabama (who will not get to play in the SEC Title game) difference currently is .9099 Alabama and .8755 Oregon. That gap could close with Oregon playing USC twice, their annual rivalry game with Oregon St., while Alabama plays two unranked, and no conference championship.

Here's a situation me and my LSU buddy wanted to present.
Assume: LSU falls to Arkansas, and OSU loses to Oklahoma. What now?!?

Now you have to hit number 11 on the rankings before you see a 2 loss school.
Now you have Ok St. who beat Texas Tech, who beat Oklahoma who beat Ok St.
Now you have Arkansas, who beat LSU, who beat Alabama, who beat Arkansas.
Now you have LSU who beat Alabama and Oregon, but might not get a sniff at such a game after losing late in the season despite beating the two teams playing for it? (according to rankings, it would be Alabama/Oregon....)
Are you really going to allow Alabama a national title game when they didn't even get to play in the SEC title game?

So the logical question? If this transpired, who gets to play for the title?

I'd almost love to see 10 1 loss teams have to get filtered through because I don't believe a playoff will arise until the BCS has a situation that really highlights how broken it is.

Re: Oregon Ducks quest for greatness Part II

"?? Pac 12 title game against #?? USC"

'SC can't play in the Pac 12 title game this year as part of its probation, but the Trojans will be a factor in who plays in it. UCLA goes if it beats 'SC and Colorado (the latter more likely than the former). ASU goes if UCLA loses either game and the Sun Devils beat UofA and Cal. Utah can get in by beating Colorado and Wazoo, but the Utes also need UCLA to lose twice, and ASU to lose at least once.
Not that it's going to make much of a difference. The Pac 12 champion was determined last Saturday in Palo Alto.
