Peyton Manning

For reasons I've never been able to fathom, Patriots' fans have demonized Peyton Manning. I suppose it would be tolerable if I'd ever heard one of them say in a moment of honesty they don't like Manning because he once kept the Patriots from going to a Super Bowl, but these people have made it personal. Ask them to get specific, and all they have is "He does too many commercials," at the same time they're making allowances for New England's schmuck of a QB who knocked up his actress girlfriend and then dumped her for a supermodel.
So I'm watching the local news last night and the sports guy is happily announcing that Manning is doubtful for this week's game and his streak of 208 straight regular season starts is in jeopardy. The sports guy throws it back to the anvil-headed anchorman who in an equally-gleeful tone declares: "And the Colts aren't very good when he doesn't play!"
The words were out of my mouth before I knew what happened: "You douche. The jackass sitting to your left just said he's made 208 consecutive starts. Who the hell knows or remembers how good the Colts are without Manning playing quarterback?"

Re: Peyton Manning

I would say because he is more of the poster boy for the NFL then Tom Brady.

I wonder why that is.
People here wear "I hate Peyton Manning" shirts. I can understand there's a rivalry between the Colts and the Patriots, and naturally there's animosity toward the quarterback of the Colts. But the Patriots usually win, at least the games that matter most. So I could understand people wearing "I'd hate the Colts if they had won as many Super Bowls as the Patriots" t-shirts, but I don't understand singling out one guy who by all accounts is a decent human being when the counterpart from the team they root for has at least one gigantic character flaw.
I tried to have a discussion about this with one of my friends who roots for the Patriots, and he tried to turn it on me because I don't like John Elway. True, but one of the reasons I don't like Elway is because he acted like a spoiled 4-year-old and whined his way out of not playing for the Colts when they were bad. Manning didn't.

Re: Peyton Manning

Tom Brady doesnt seem to have a very good personality.  His interviews are very unentertaning.  Not only that but he is a pretty boy.  I doubt the NFL really wants to promote a pretty boy as their poster child.  Manning comes across as a good-ol-boy and seems much more like one of the guys then Brady.  Brady is the Jeff Gordan on the NFL.  I pretty boy you either love because you are a Patriots fan or hate because you are the rest of the world.  While I have Peyton Manning fatigue from hearing about him on SC and seeing him in every 3rd commercial I dont dislike him.  He seems like a pretty good guy and I admire that he didnt rape the Colts for every penny he could get out of them.

Re: Peyton Manning

There was a very early game (this will become obvious when you hear the outcome) in Manning's career when Miami beat them in a playoff game. I think this was the Lamar Smith era of Dave Wannstedt. I remember Manning getting his chin busted open by a helmet coming under his mask. He went to the sideline, got stitched up, came back out and played. Miami won, but it was close.

He came into the press conference barely able to speak. Opening his mouth caused him a lot of pain and he mumbled... "Well, they just kicked our butts." No excuses, no bullshit, no apologies, no get you next times.... I always admired that. I did come to dislike Peyton Manning because he was so fkn good and worked so hard, and we didn't have him on our team. Trying to beat Indianapolis in Indianapolis was about as easy as walking on water for a long long time... I always respected him though, he's busted his butt since day 1 and never taken the game for granted. I loved him calling Vanderjagt a "drunken idiot kicker" or whatever it was.

Manning has a personality I can't really hate. He's a really good guy.
