St. Louis - Brewers centerfielder Nyjer Morgan said St. Louis pitcher Chris Carpenter dropped an F-bomb on him after striking him out in the ninth inning Wednesday night, leading to a response from Morgan that resulted in a bench-clearing altercation.

"There's really nothing to explain," said Morgan, who was ejected for his role in the confrontation.

Asked if he responded something Carpenter said, Morgan replied, "There you go."

Pressed on what Carpenter said, Morgan said the pitcher shouted "(Bleep) you."

"They only saw what I said," said Morgan, who tossed his chewing tobacco toward Carpenter, prompting St. Louis first baseman Albert Pujols to charge Morgan and start a bench-clearing episode that did not proceed much farther.

"He didn't say nothing when I hit that double (in the fourth inning)," said Morgan. "I was walking off the field until he said 'F-you.'"

Asked if he hit Carpenter with his chewing tobacco, Morgan said, "Naw, I missed him."

"It's just one of those things, the competitiveness coming out in both teams," he added. "He was battling and I was battling. He felt he had to say something. If he feels he has to say something, let him say it. But as soon as he said it, he turns his back and runs away.

"Whatever. It is what it is."

Then, Morgan got in this dig on the Cardinals: "We're still in first place, believe it. It's nothing left to say other than we're still in first place and they're chasing us."

After the Brewers' 2-0 loss, the Cards pulled within 8 1/2 games of them in the NL Central. The Brewers' magic number remained at 11 with 18 games to play.

Let Mr. Morgan talk. I won't lose any sleep over it.

Here's how we should look at it. If St. Louis makes it somehow into postseason, and plays against Milwaukee, we're likely to take their lunch money and their girlfriends. Don't know if we can get into postseason, but it's a nice measure of comfort knowing we've OWNED them in the last two series should we make it.

Enough of this however, how are the Mets doing?!?
