Re: 9/20 (CDT) Gamecrap

I can't believe they came back to win. It'd be nice if Florida had shown up tonight. Tragic number is down to 5.

I just saw Chambers' triple. He has to be the fastest player in MLB. No question.

Well.. This helps a little. Atlanta's tragic number is really 6. Since we owned them head to head, they can't finish with the same record we have.

Re: 9/20 (CDT) Gamecrap

"Here, the wheels began spinning madly. La Russa sent up lefthanded-hitting Daniel Descalso to bat against righthander Josh Stinson. Mets manager Terry Collins switched to lefthander Tim Byrdak and the new pinch-hitter, somewhat forgotten man Theriot, doubled to left center to put the Cardinals ahead. It was the righthanded-batting Theriot's third hit in seven at-bats against Byrdak.

Yadier Molina was walked intentionally to re-load the bases. La Russa pulled Skip Schumaker, nothing for nine against Byrdak. Righthanded-hitting Tony Cruz was dispatched to hit, but not really.

When Collins went to righthander D.J. Carrasco, La Russa answered with the lefthanded-batting Chambers, who won a game for the Cardinals last week in Philadelphia with his first major-league hit.

His second hit was much more productive, clearing the bases, and Chambers completed his triumphant tour, scoring on a single by Nick Punto, who also had not started the game."

There aren't many games where you can say that the manager really had an active hand in winning the game, but last night was definitely one of them. Great work by Tony.

It's also nice to see the boys pumped up. Watching them break through, everyone hits, cheers each other on, feeds off each other, and the game turns from being down 6-5 to running away 11-6. We need to get down to 1 game out on the Braves before they go into Philadelphia to really have a good chance, and last night could have been the season if they don't come through.

Atlanta // Marlins (Lowe v. Vazquez) --- Lowe's had a shit season, Vazquez has been a little better, but he's hittable too. This is a game that Florida would win 60% of the time in my opinion. Hopefully they win tonight.
Mets // Cardinals (Schwinden v. Garcia) --- Garcia at home vs a rookie 2-0 and only thrown 5.0 innings in both of his starts (both losses) to this point.

This could be a great day, go Cards!!!

If we tie with Atlanta we'd have to play a playoff game against them.  Head-to-head record wouldn't matter.

Re: 9/20 (CDT) Gamecrap

Just so I get the rules, tiebreakers only apply for seeding playoff teams. If there's only 1 playoff spot to be had, there's a 1 game "play-in" game. The home team is whoever won the tiebreaker logic correct?

So their "tragic" number to eliminate us is still 6. If we finish with the same record, it's coming back to Busch for a 1 game party.

That's correct?

Re: 9/20 (CDT) Gamecrap

I'm not sure that the head-to-head is used for deciding the location.  I seem to remember in the past that MLB did some sort of coin flip (or something similarly random) to decide where the game is played.

Otherwise, you're right.  If there's a tie, and both teams have a playoff spot, then head-to-head is used to break the tie.  That's what happened the year we tied with Houston and we ended up the Wild Card.

Re: 9/20 (CDT) Gamecrap

Actually Alz, you are correct.  Apparently MLB dispensed with the coin toss in 2009.

Re: 9/20 (CDT) Gamecrap

The way LaRussa has managed the rotation, Carp would pitch on the last day of the season. Presumably, that puts Lohse on deck for the playoff game. How short a leash will that be?

With any luck we'll be able to throw a spot start up there for game #162 after securing the Wild Card spot, to ensure that Carpenter is ready for Game 1/2/3 of the NLDS... We will definitely need him!

Re: 9/20 (CDT) Gamecrap

It seems stupid to let a coin flip decide home field advantage in a one game playoff.  I would think head to head play would be used.  Doesnt the 162 games played count more then a heads call?

Re: 9/20 (CDT) Gamecrap

Alz, my bad on the Cardinals' tragic number. For some reason I was thinking the Braves have 89 wins.
