"But I was actually a little taken aback to see Motte's mug pop up on the screen with a four-run lead one night after a four-out save."
Motte is a seventh inning guy, maybe an eighth inning guy, but he's not a ninth inning guy. I don't think McClellan is either because he gives up so many home runs.
Right now I wouldn't be adverse to sending Dotel out there in the ninth. At least he's been there before and won't get spooked.
If last night's game ends up being the difference between a playoff berth and golf season, one of the things that's going to get overlooked was losing Lance Lynn. I think he may have very well taken over the closer's role by this point.
And if you had said that to me in February, I wouldn't have believed you.

Artie, enjoy that trip to Buffalo. They don't recover from that loss.
Rarely do you see the words "enjoy" and "Buffalo" in the same sentence.
Only when they're immediately followed by "wings", or separated by "[my favorite team]'s trouncing of".
How many restaurants in upstate N.Y. claim to have "invented" the Buffalo Wing? I think I've eaten at three.

"Understandable, and I of course couldn't tell from my vantage point. But I was actually a little taken aback to see Motte's mug pop up on the screen with a four-run lead one night after a four-out save."
That was my biggest criticism of Larussa. Motte was the only relief pitcher who pitched on Wednesday and, as you point out, it was a 4 out appearance. With a day game following a night game, Motte should have been the last option. If you can't trust Salas, McClellan or Boggs to get you 3 outs with a 4 run lead, why are they on the team?

I didn't "get" to see the game yesterday. Did Furcal screw up yet again? I saw the screw up on Wed. that could have cost the game.
I returned late Thursday afternoon only to see the blow up score from the top of the ninth (cry)

Motte walks leadoff in 9th
Furcal muffs easy, routine doubleplay ball (at this point the wagons are circled, and )
walk

Mets subbing for the Braves grab a 2 scalp lead .

Potential double play ball that he couldn't get out of his glove. Furcal's defensive metrics are otherwise off the charts compared to Theriout's, but Furcal has committed 10 errors in 46 games. That's gross.

Did anyone else catch Theriot's "All I'm saying is we were in first place when I was the starting shortstop" quote earlier this week. I didn't realize clubhouse "chemistry" including trying to blow up the team.

I think the more appropriate phrase would have been "in spite of."
Theriout is a douchebag. The only good thing about them not making the playoffs would be he becomes and ex-Cardinal sooner.

I think Motte can be a ninth inning pitcher, but right now he's worn down. Time to go to Dotel.

I meant to post this sooner, but got busy with work. Here's the exact Theriot quote and link:
"I don't think at this point in my career I see myself as a second baseman," he said. "That said, I have no problem going to play second base. It doesn't bother me at all."
The Cardinals led the division until July 27, four days before the Furcal acquisition. Speaking only about his own role, Theriot noted, "When I was playing shortstop we were in first place. I know that. It is what it is."

He's got a point. Skippy is better. And I'd probably rather have Punto, too.

Someone should suggest placing a step-stool in front of his bathroom mirror.

Furcal is not in the line-up tonight.

I cant believe the guy that was supposed to offer better defense has found a way to be very Theriotsih with the glove.
