"We were a bit undermanned (on account of injuries)" --DeWitt

"We went through a tailspin at the wrong time. And I would say we were a bit undermanned. We lost some key guys to injuries. Now, you get injuries every year and I don't like to use that as an excuse. But when you lose two starting pitchers (Brad Penny and Kyle Lohse) essentially for the year, that's not an excuse so much as it is misfortune.  We lost our third baseman (David Freese) for half a season. That ... was misfortune."

We will lose the division by 4 to 6 games.  I agree with DeWitt that the three guys he mentioned would have given us a decent shot at making up that difference.  What DeWitt does not respond to, is the criticism that the Cards could have invested more resources last offseason (increased payroll) to add more depth to the team, and also to add more help down the stretch.  That's not misfortune; those are business decisions.

It's an old argument, but one that won't go away, either: we can't know for sure whether opening the purse strings a bit would have put the Cardinals organization at financial risk, or merely have dug into the cream that the owners scoop off the top.

Bernie weighs in:

"Solution: grow the payroll. Come on, Chairman, you know it can be done.
The Cardinals rank fourth in the majors in home attendance this season and will finish with around 3.3 million tickets sold. Even in a down economy, business is brisk. The fans are performing better than the team.

Re: "We were a bit undermanned (on account of injuries)" --DeWitt

I've seen very little of the Cards over the past several weeks but it looks to me like DeLasco is the real deal.  He's got excellent hands, a strong arm, and seems to be able to hit ML pitching, although there isn't a lot of that around this time of year.  He's also a left-handed hitter.

Frankly, in this day, I can't see playing with a midget at 3B no matter how good he is in every other aspect of the game.  So he's obviously someone who should be a 2B from day one next year.  But then why in the world did we burn our no. 1 draft pick on another 2dbaseman?

Could it be that this organization is staffed with very few good baseball men and that there is almost no communication within the system?

Cox is a third baseman, I thought.  And I think Delasco's BA has fallen to the lowers .200s.  I dont know if that matters much if he is looking good at the plate.  I have not seen him take an at bat so I am opinionless.

If I am hearing you correctly, Mags, you like everything you've seen about DeLasco at 3rd, but like everyone else in the organization, you want to see him play where he specs out and where we have a gap, even if that's the bullpen.  I am with you.  You say he's a lefty?

I'm pretty sure that Cox was almost exclusively a 2d baseman at Arkansas and they mentioned on the Cardinal broadcast the other night that DeLasco had played only a few games at third since he's been pro until Tony decided to stick him there.  I believe he played 2d only at Memphis but I'll check to be sure.

Like you, I don't know how much significance you can attach to a drop in his BA at this point.  One hitless night can change him from a .350 hitter to one below the Mendoza line.

On the MLB network last night, they showed the Cards turn a double play with him at third and Skip at second.  I don't think I've ever seen a 6-4-3 executed any quicker.  If the Cards don't trade skip this season, I look for him to be a back up second baseman and a regular late inning defensive replacement for just about any of their current OF, especially Craig.

BTW, I'm really impressed by how much Holliday's defense has improved.  I never thought he loafed, but he looks like he is really playing hard.  He's missed a couple that Musial or Brock would have gotten but I'm no longer inclined to refer to him as "Skates" Holliday.

Cox is a thirdbaseman.  Some think he projects more as a secondbaseman, but he was drafted to play 3B.

I like Descalso. He has a good arm and he plays hard. From what I've seen, I don't think he can hit left-handed pitching, but that's based on a very small sample size. The guy who seems to have benefitted the most from being in the lineup every day is Allen Craig. His average went up 53 points since Sept. 21.

Was I wrong in thinking that he was mainly a 2B at Arkansas?

Also, which minor league affiliate did he wind up with?

He was mainly a 3B, but they moved him to 2B late in the year and eventually to DH in the NCAAs because of some injury that kept him from being able to play well in the field. I recall it was a back injury, but that seems odd because you'd think it would impact him the most at the plate. His fielding percentage at third was awful, BTW. His body type isn't a second baseman's.
The kid I really liked from that team was Brett Eibner. Big kid with a lot of power and a great arm. The Royals grabbed him in the second round and want to make him a pitcher, but I think he could make a good right fielder someday.

The Gulf Coast (rookie) League is the only league I could find anything on Mr' Cox .

Thanks.  I somehow overlooked that one.  I thought I had tried the rosters of every Cardinal affiliate.

And thanks to you, Arte.  I have to depend on my friends to update me on my alma matter.  Just a little over a week ago I learned from a friend who went to Vandy that the Hogs have some QB named Mallet who's supposed to be hot stuff but threw 3 interceptions against Alabama the following weekend.

No real shame in that. I'm convinced Alabama would be the second-best team in the AFC West.

Yes, but I suspect their payroll is the highest in either division.

Mags, I now have a strong rooting interest in the SEC. I am 100 percent for Arkansas now that Bobby Petrino from Helena, MT,  and his brother Paul (sound familiar) is the Offensive Coordinator. They are the sons of Bobby Petrino Sr. from Butte, MT who won several NAIA Championships at Carroll College in Helena, MT where both his sons played quarterback. Paul is also married to the daughter of a good friend of ours from Helena.

Paul Pettrino isn't at Arkansas. He's the Offensive Coordinator for Ron Zook at Illinois.

And how in the world could ANYBODY root for a Bobby Petrino team? I don't care if I grew up on the same street as Petrino -- that guy is a dick.

Who won today.  That option was pretty fun to watch.  Penn must suck this year.

Illinois looked good today. And that makes Missouri's win on opening day look a little better.

I think the Jake Locker Heisman watch is officially over, TK.

"Penn must suck this year."

Penn is generally one of the stronger teams in the Ivy League, AP. The Yalies used to ascribe their athletic success to their willingness to accept "the coloreds" into their program.
If we're going to have a discussion about FCS, keep your eye on the UMass Minutement. Their only loss so far has been at Michigan, by five points.
