Good for Rick.  Didn't see that as I was already sleeping it off by then.

Man, sixty seconds between posts is harsh.

Sorry, guys. After the way he treated Rasmus last season, I ain't rooting for Ankiel. Besides, he's a shitty baseball player.

Are you for real?  I agree with the shitty baseball part.  At least at the plate but I am not sure I know enough to judge him about Rasmus.

Re: Here's an ex-Card we can root for

I hope Mr. Fufkin was being facetious.

In any case, I thought the scouting report on Ankiel was to throw him nothing but braking balls.  That looked like a meat pitch, right over the center, with no movement.  Was that supposed to be a fastball?  Hanging slider?  In any case, it didn't work, and I'm glad Rick got the sweet spot of bat on that one.

I'm not. Pulling rank a on younger player who's taking over your spot is bush league. I'm pretty sure Ankiel didn't get the same treatment from Edmonds, and Ankiel couldn't carry Edmonds' jock.
I'm also not buying into the Bobby Cox farewell tour. He's still a wife-beating drunk. I can't root for the Braves.

Ankiel gave Rasmus a hard time last year. Rookie hazing and all that. It's bullshit.

This is the first I have heard of it.  Was this written about?  Gossiped about?  What supposedly happened?

It was wrote about and Rasmus sited it as a majot issue with his 2009 season.

It was well-chronicled in the P-D during the off-season. Ankiel was insecure about his status with the team and vented his anxiety at Rasmus. Given the collective intelligence of the two people involved, it was probably junior high school stuff. The manager or one of the esteemed veterans probably should have put a stop to it, but as we've discovered since then, Rasmus isn't the most popular figure in that clubhouse.

Rasmus shouldnt have wined about it either.  It you take a certain amoung of shit and let it roll off your back it gains you respect.  It might not be the most PC thing in the world but it is kind of how guys work.

No doubt, but here's a 22-year-old rookie with not a lot of intelligence to behind with and cow manure between his toes trying to figure out why there are not one but TWO toilet bowls in his private hotel room at the Ritz - the other one is called a "bidet," Corby - and he's suddenly taking grief from a guy he's never done anything to who most people remember as the reason why the "Beware of objects leaving the field" disclaimer is printed on the back of every ticket to a major league baseball game.

Ramus should have just taken it. Isn't bullying just an athletic tradition?

I tend to forget that these are people who have never been told no or had to take the lifes up and down like the rest of us normal people.  They were always the cool one.

I don't know if Rasmus was ever admired too much. I'm guessing his father put him in a position that resulted in an equal combination of arrogance and ignorance that just put people off. I don't think he was the guy his buddies - if he had any - would call as soon as they scored a case of beer so they could sneak off and drink it somewhere.
Ankiel's upbringing was obviously about as dysfunctional as it gets. Sometimes I get annoyed at myself because I have lapses as a parent, but it's usually because I spent too much time with my kid and get overwhelmed. I'm not going to end up doing time for dealing drugs. So I've got that going for me ... which is nice.
