Oregon Ducks quest for greatness!

As long as Ohio State or Alabama loses a game somewhere, and they run perfect through the pac-10, and Boise State/TCU don't somehow bump them without a loss, and the stars align just right....

In a rather "Cub-esque" fashion I will proclaim it our year. Quack.

I think you need a couple more "ifs" in there for it to be truly Cub-esque. For instance, "If a geek wearing a Walkman doesn't run onto the field and draws a 15-yard penalty thus negating a game-winning field goal in the final seconds of the OSU game ..." might be  appropriate.

Who wants to start the "Auzten Stadium is really a pitchers' park" debate?

Re: Oregon Ducks quest for greatness!

Well there was the Stanford game that kept Harrington from getting to line up against Miami for the title, instead we were ranked 4th and thrashed Colorado to finish #2.

Then there was the pre-Pittsburgh "Dennis Dixon's knee sux" episode where we were number 2 and cruising and he blew a tire, and lost the Heisman, and we were out of the race.

After Masoli getting himself kicked off the team for theft/moronics, I was convinced Thomas/Costa wasn't enough to really do much for us. Thankfully I appear to be mistaken, Thomas looks really good. It probably helps having LaHeisman James pushing out 700 yards in 4 games. Still though, I would truly love to see us get a shot at Alabama. We would most certainly be the most difficult offense they have ever had to deal with, while the same can be said of us facing their Defense.

Besides, my supervisor is a Bama fan, and I want to politely rub his ass in it when the Ducks win everything. Right before he switches me from a contractor to a permanent employee.... There may be a flaw in that logic.

Re: Oregon Ducks quest for greatness!

(grin)

I shouldn't be, but I will be stunned when the BCS rankings come out and Ohio State is No. 2. Absolutely ridiculous. Ohio State has played one legitimate team -- Oregon put up 52 on the No. 9 team and beat a SEC(!) team by 25.

Assuming both Oregon and Ohio State run the table, the computer will decide if Ohio State's wins over Miami, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan State and the Denard Robinsons is more impressive than Oregon's wins over Stanford, UCLA, Oregon State and Arizona. Hopefully there's an algorithim that factors in the Big 10's embarrassments since the 2003 National Championship.

Ultimately, Oregon will be done in by USC losing to Washington. Beating them would give the Ducks a fifth quality win. And I also don't think Arizona is going to win at Stanford, which will lessen the quality of that win.

Sorry, Alz. I'm rooting for the Ducks to face Alabama, but I don't see Sweater Vest coughing one up at Wisconsin or Iowa.

"Assuming both Oregon and Ohio State run the table"

I still think no one goes through the Pac 10 this year undefeated. There are just too many tough teams week after week. I hate to light the match to this stick of dynamite, but until the NCAA institutes a playoff system, the BCS people will still insist that 12-0 in the Big Ten is better than 11-1 in the Pac 10, and it ain't so this year.

For which team do does one root in Alabama/S. Carolina?

I like Spurrier and Saban . Hard call, at the moment the old ball coach is giving nick a chalkboard lesson .

If I ever get a dog, I'm naming it "Haase." Just so when I'm drunk, I can say "Scheelhaase."

It's sort of like the Iran/Iraq war. You really don't care which one loses, and long as one of them does.

I enjoyed watching Saban get one shoved up his ass.

Of course with Alabama losing, the voters will have to figure out a way to drop Boise State and TCU to save the "integrity" of the BCS.

I thought it was great how quickly he threw his players under the bus. That's a guy you want to play for. Of course, by the time you get used to him, he's moved on to his next job.

Good call. Consensus OSU #1, Oregon #2, Boise #3, then USA Today has Nebraska leaping over TCU. Apparently, that 45-0 beatdown of Wyoming didn't impress the voters.

And lest we neglect to mention New Mexico State's 16-14 win over New Mexico in the battle for bragging rights in the Land of Entrapment. I wonder if Windy's still out celebrating ...

Re: Oregon Ducks quest for greatness!

Oregon will remain perfect throughout the weekend, that much is certain. It's being said that the first week of the BCS will have Boise State at number 1, by way of victories over a top 10 ranked opponent and a top 25.

This will be as it should be, but they will fall from that spot (even going perfect) should Oregon and Ohio State win out. Boise doesn't have much left on it's schedule that poses difficulty besides possibly Nevada.

Good call. As good as the Duckies have looked so far, I'm sticking with my prediction that no one will run the table in the Pac 10 this year. If I had to pick, I'd say that trip to Corvallis at the end of the year could be a land mine.
And I don't want to seem like Lisa Lampanelli here, but how does a mother give one of her kids a perfectly bland first name like James, and the next one a perfectly unique name like Jacquizz?

Re: Oregon Ducks quest for greatness!

Could be right on the prediction. Pac 10 is tough, and deep. here's what's left for Oregon.

Thu, Oct 21 UCLA 9:00 pm
Sat, Oct 30 at USC 8:00 pm
Sat, Nov 6 Washington TBA
Sat, Nov 13 at California TBA
BYE WEEK
Fri, Nov 26 (17) Arizona 7:00 pm
Sat, Dec 4 at (24) Oregon State TBA

UCLA I don't understand. How do you get your ass kicked by Kansas State and California, but beat Texas and Houston... Depending on which team shows up, we could have our hands full. Still though, we have 2 weeks to prep for this, so this should be a win.

USC I do understand. They got nipped by Washington and Stanford. They can play. The Oregon game is down there as well. This game I worry about.

Washington is in Autzen, and I'm not really scared of this.

California is another road game, and another team that looks tough. Losses to Nevada (19) and a 1 point loss at Arizona (17) says they can play with anyone, I'm more worried about USC, but this is no pushover.

Arizona (currently 17), in Autzen, this is a game we could possibly drop, but shouldn't (like the rest of the games honestly). Still though, this is the closing point on the season with the Oregon State game closing it out, and I would hope if they are still perfect by this point, they step up and put it on Arizona.

Oregon State in Corvallis. Not much distance really seperating the two schools here, but there is no love lost at all either. The close proximity makes this a pretty heated football rivalry, this is a tough game if both teams are winless. Oregon State will elevate their play when their Eugene neighbors come to town. Both of Oregon State's losses came from ranked teams (Boise State/Arizona). This would be a heartbreaker to lose, but after the @USC game, this is the most difficult on our schedule in my opinion.

Re: Oregon Ducks quest for greatness!

Only two Pac-10 teams can play defense -- Arizona and California. Only one of those games are on the road. My guess is the Cal game will be kinda sorta close, the Arizona game will be really close and the Oregon State game will be a shootout. There's just no way it doesn't end up in the 40s.

My BCS bowl predictions as of October 14:

National Championship - Nebraska vs. Ohio State (Buckeyes are in the drivers seat. Nebraska will beat OU in the Big 12 championship game)

Sugar Bowl - Alabama vs. Boise St.

Fiesta Bowl - Oklahoma vs. TCU

Rose Bowl - Oregon vs. Iowa

Orange Bowl - Florida State vs. West Virginia

Kiffin will do something stupid and lose that game for SC. If I had been Steve Sarkisian, two weeks ago I would have grabbed a microphone right after the game, gone to the middle of the Coliseum and said "If you had promised me the job when Carroll left, you would have won tonight. Instead  (pointing at Kiffin) you got stuck with THAT. See ya in Seattle next year when we beat you for the third time in a row."

"National Championship - Nebraska vs. Ohio State"

Well, that's not very promising. I'd rather see Boise vs. TCU.

Re: Oregon Ducks quest for greatness!

I'd rather watch Florida State-West Virginia.

OSU-Nebraska will set new standards for quarterbacks who can't throw. This Martinez kid at Nebraska is a lightning bolt at quarterback. I don't know if even Michael Vick was averaging over 10 yards per rush.

EDIT: Looked it up and Vick averaged around 5-6 yards per carry.

Re: Oregon Ducks quest for greatness!

tk, I understand the sentiments about nebraska, it looks more and more like they are going to be sitting out of the party despite having a team that should probably be top 5 in the nation.

I hate the college football schedule so much.... even an 8 team playoff would be better. As it stands the bowls are basically.

National Championship - Oregon vs Ohio State

Sugar Bowl - Who cares
Fiesta Bowl - Could give a shit
Rose Bowl - Don't give a rats ass
Orange Bowl - I'd rather watch curling

Prefaced by a lot of lesser bowls. "Vagasil 1 Applied Ointment" Bowl, the "Massengil Bowl", the "Vivid Entertainment" Bowl (Okay I would watch this one)..... Who gives a shit about this. What everyone wants to see is 1v8, 2v7, 3v6, and 4v5. Bring the winners together, name the semi's and finals "bowls" and actually let teams play into the right to play for it all. Then it means something. Kills me that the same goddamned entity that brings us the beauty and wonder that is March Madness has this fucked up system and will not fix it.

Speaking of which, has any of you caught the "Lingerie Football League" yet? I think its games are on Versus.

Re: Oregon Ducks quest for greatness!

I actually like the Rose Bowl, or at least the idea of the Rose Bowl. Watching meaningless bowl games has been a tradition for me since about 1999. Not to say I don't want a playoff system, but I quite enjoy laying down and watching pre-Christmas Day bowls during the week nights.

Re: Oregon Ducks quest for greatness!

tk, you could still have those bowls. If they offered an 8 or 16 team playoff you could bowl name every game, and have it be meaningful. They just wouldn't be the last games that the winners played.
