    Jay is less than a stride from home (not 10 feet), and the tag is where it is because that's where the ball arrived.

    Is he 10 feet away?

    Did Jay commit to the impact only when he saw the ball in the catcher's mitt?

    Not always right, ready to admit when I'm wrong, and don't even make a big deal of differences until someone incorrectly calls me put as wrong.  Are you ready to do likewise?

    let's make sure you took a good look at this one, a split second before the other. 

    body position clearly not preparing for a slide.

    That little chinging noise that the broadcast is making when it brings up something on screen is driving me nuts.  I thought something was in my house for the first 5 innings.

    I guess that's the closest I'll get to an "I'm wrong" from you.  In any case, back to this one, at the point the ball entered the glove.  Look at Jay's hips and the position of his planted foot.  If he had slid, instead of committed to the impact, his foot would be extended and damned close to being on home.  Sure he might have been out, but it would have taken an amazing reaction from Ruiz to bring that tag down with any chance at all to get Jay.

    For reference, if we assume the throw bounced in at 50 mph, and we assume the ball was 12" away from the mitt in the first photo, then about 1/73 of a second transpired between photos one and two.  If Jay had slid, his hip would still be at the front edge of the batters box and his leading foot would have been inches from the plate.  How fast do you think a guy can bring a tag down?  it would have to be much faster than 1/73 of a second, by the looks of things.

    I was going to post "LaRussa is going to use three pitchers on the next three batters" about 10 minutes ago, but I didn't think Boggs would get FrankenPence or Rhodes would get Howard.

    Naturally, but remember he's only a .255 hitter. The problem is he hits about .800 against the Cardinals and .225 against the rest of the league.
