That is correct.

In September, I was pretty lukewarm on Dotel being back in 2012, but now I think they have to. I don't think he's in danger of losing his effectiveness ala Franklin.

I had this discussion with someone the other day. I have a feeling that Dotel becomes the compromise when Larussa wants a big money closer. The team says "no," but brings back Dotel as an insurance policy in case Motte, salas or Sanchez can't get it done.

Think Arthur Rhodes enjoyed that?

I'd be fine with that. $3.5 million is a lot for Dotel, but he's still a very good reliever and they need dependable arms.

maybe.  but as you have said before picking the reliever who is going to be effective is a bit of a crapshoot, and i am starting to believe that, a bit.

Methinks Beltre just got screwed.

Re: World Series, Game 1

Wow, this is a big decision by the umpires. That ball had to hit Beltre's foot.

Guess Holliday learned fly balls are less painful when you don't take them off the nuts.

Way to go Cards!!!

Re: World Series, Game 1

Thoughts:

- I like these 3-2 games more than the 9-6 and 12-6 slugfests with the Brewers.
- Beltre is the guy they need to stay away from right now. I know Napoli got their big hit, but Carp left a fastball up and stuff happens. He's a groundout waiting to happen as long as they bust him inside. Cruz doesn't worry me, as long as they pitch him away.
- Hamilton needs to sit. Full marks to him for courage, but he just can't play as long as his groin is bothering him like that.
- Thanks to Ron Washington for sending up Herman German or whatever the name is of the guy who hadn't been to the plate in the month of October with the tying run on third base and two outs in the top of the seventh.
- I'm OK with the Rangers pitching around Pujols right now. If they want to put him on and deal with Holliday, Berkman and Freese, let 'em.
- I swear I said to my wife when Craig came up "He's going to drive in this run." I made no other predictions before and after.
- Tim McCarver was just awful tonight.

Carpenter already looks sharper than he did last week.

I thought he pitched smart. I don't think he threw a curveball until the second time through the order. At first, I was worried he was going to forgo the curve because of his elbow issues and just go with the cutter and the fastball, but he dropped a couple of nasty hammers in the middle innings. I especially liked the one that made Young's knee buckle.

Nyjer probably isn't even watching. He's probably taking the head start he got to the off-season and working on his Plushdamentals, so he bats above .200 next post-season.

i recall an anecdote about la russa and the coaches discussing russel branyan's share, that made it sound like there is a lot of discretion there.

There's a lot of discretion, but I think it's still up to the players. Voting on shares used to be a big deal, but most of them these days have contracts that are so big that the post-season shares are probably spent on Christmas presents. I think I remember reading about how one team a few years ago gave full shares to the grounds crew.

Chad's brother-in-law, Ben, has been helping him since around 2008.  Ben works the video room when the team is on the road and works the out of town games when the team is at home.  Young kid, maybe 24 years old.  Just got engaged this past summer and is getting married next spring.  Ben doesn't know it yet, but as a wedding present, the players voted him a full share.

I'll take your word on the precise medical terminology, but if I ever get an erection lasting longer than four hours, the last thing I'm thinking about is calling my doctor. He's 60-years-old and looks like Wilford Brimley.

Kind of makes you feel good about rooting for a team when you find out the players on it are not a bunch of greedy bastards.

Re: World Series, Game 1

Notes from the Bar.

Beltre got hosed, anyone who watched the ball bounce could tell it wasn't just spin. Nobody gets that kind of english on a baseball. Still though, nothing is to say that it was a game killer. They had 26 other legitimate outs to use to score another run.

I nearly called a Furcal 3 run homer, but it only made it to the track. I don't know if you've noticed, but Furcal swings a bat that's nearly bigger then he is, and the pitcher was bringing it in the high 90's. I said to my buddy, "3 run homer. Furcal is going to get that tree trunk around and that ball is going to end up in the river." Nearly happened, not quite.

The Rangers were one bad pitch from getting goose-egged.

Kudos to the sportsmanship of the Rangers by not stomping on a helpless Carpenter draped over first base. I probably would have stomped on him, I have no sense of sportsmanship at all.

Fucking double plays!!!!

1 down, I like the matchup tonight. I have a good amount of confidence in Garcia in the cold, at home. Colby Lewis doesn't inspire terror in me.

McCarver correctly noted you don't have time to fake a reaction when you foul a ball off your foot like that.

Re: World Series, Game 1

Craig is the man.  Berkman said post game that he could bat cleanup on 75% of major league teams.  I wonder what there plans are for him.  BigMac has made that comment and that is the second time Berkman has made it.  I wonder if they dont try the second base thing again.

No surprise that Napoli took Carpenter deep. He owned him when Carpenter pitched for the Blue Jays...
