Going back to Max's comment about the MLB wanting certain player in the WS.  They just want big market teams because there is more money to be had.  They know that 3/5 of the TV viewers watching the WS are likely eitehr Ranger or Cardinals fans.

What comment was that?

"How can MLB expect people in major media centers  like New York and LA to get excited about a series featuring the Cardinals and Rangers, if they've been fed a steady diet of Yankees and Red Sox games?"

I ment to say teams not players.  And I know it isnt exactly what you said but I think you have it backasswards.  MLB and the media dont promote teams in hope they make it to the playoffs.  MLB and the media wants to see teams in the WS that will draw them the highest revenue.  That is why we are fed a steady diet of Sox's/Yankees.  They draw more viewers.

whose ass is backwards?  i know that it's the horse that drives the cart.  my point is that the NFL chose a model where the horse and cart have a driver, who follows some sort of sustainable optimal foraging strategy, whereas MLB is pretty much content to let the horse take the cart wherever it likes, and we can see where that is leading . . .

I don't think that's a major media center issue Max.  I know some of you guys watch a lot more non-Cardinal baseball than I do, but I can fairly safely say that I watch little to no baseball that doesn't involve the Cardinals, and it isn't because I'm tired of seeing Boston/New York/LA, it's because I don't care.  I don't think I watched 5 consecutive minutes of the ALCS.

But do you watch the football playoffs and Super Bowl?

Yes, but that has nothing to do with the financial structure of the sport. Baseball tends to bore me. I also used to get the NHL Center Ice package and would watch out of town games. I find football and hockey much more entertaining.

It's an apples and oranges comparison. Every NFL game is on netwrok television. That isn't the case with MLB, the NBA and the NHL. And if you think the NFL owners are sitting around holding hands and singing Kumbaya while sharing all of their revenues, you're crazy. The lockout that just ended in July was less about player salaries than it was about what goes into the collective pool of money that's used for purposes of setting the cap. Owners like Jerry Jones, Daniel Snyder and the Irsays want no part of sharing the revenue they draw from their new stadiums with the likes of Buffalo, Cincinnati and Cleveland.

And if you don't think the "premiere" NFL games (Sunday/Monday night) aren't reserved for a select few teams, you aren't paying attention. The Rams got a Monday night game this season, their first in 5-6 years. How many of those games do you think New England has played?

NFL and MLB fans are not the ass.  It is the differences in the sports themself that draws fans to watch the super bowl no matter who is playing in it.
