Cards will make it official tomorrow.

Not surprised. Credit Moz for being a guy who does what he says and says what he means. Given that, I think the odds of the Cards resigning Pujols just went down a bit in my estimation, not because of Matheny, but because Moz has made it clear that they will move Berkman to first and start Craig in RF without Pujols, and DeWitt won't pony up for him. The decision will be Pujols's, of course, but I reckon he would need to leave $50-100 M on the table to sign with the Cards, assuming the Cards now offer, at best, an 8 year deal with a $22-23 M AAV.

"It is not known whether the Cardinals will announce plans for Matheny’s coaching staff Monday; however, it is believed that Maloney will be promoted to the major-league staff. Mozeliak has expressed a desire the past two years to begin promoting more minor-league personnel onto a major-league staff that remained relatively static under La Russa.
Oquendo, first-base coach Dave McKay and pitching coach Dave Duncan have expressed a desire to remain with the club regardless of the next manager’s identity. Duncan is the only coach from La Russa’s staff signed through next season. His contract includes an option for 2013"-----------Strauss

I wonder if this will be the first time ever that a pitching coach earned substantially more than the manager he nominally worked for.
So, if they pay Metheny, say, $1 M to manage, what will they do with the $4.5 M in savings, or whatever it was, from Tony's last contract?

I'm neither pleased nor angry. It's impossible to know how Matheny will do.

Francona pees on the Cubs, LOL! Gets passed over in STL, then magically decides he'd rather "re-energize" than try to haul the bag of crap known as the Chicago Cubs across the finish line ---->
Priceless. How bad is the Cubs' situation when the guy who had to rely on painkillers to cope with the Red Sox says thanks anyway?

Coaching staff is set:
Duncan, Oquendo, Aldrete, McGwire, Maloney.
Aldrete is the new bench coach; Maloney takes over for Dave McKay.

If they were going to change I would say they left the right pieces.

Looks like Matheny might be living at the ballpark.

ST. LOUIS • The Cardinals completed new managerMike Matheny's staff by adding a familiar name and another former player the club has tried to lure into the coaching ranks.
John Mabry was announced Friday as the team's new assistant hitting coach, taking over for Mike Aldrete, who was promoted to bench coach.
The hiring was completed earlier in the week but the Cardinals declined to confirm it until making the announcement this afternoon.
Mabry, 41, was a sixth-round draft pick of the Cardinals in 1991. During his 14-year career, Mabry played for eight teams. He spent most of his career with the Cardinals, last playing for the local nine in 2005.
The Cardinals also finalized the training staff that will work with Matheny's clubhouse. Barry Weinberg, who came with manager Tony La Russa from Oakland, will move from the major-league staff to a Senior Medical Adviser position and will be stationed in Jupiter, Fla. Chris Conroy has been promoted to assistant trainer, coming from the club's Class AAA affiliate in Memphis.

Is he one of the guy's who had a target on his forehead?

I used to think so since he was demoted but maybe Barry just wants less of a role or not to travel. Getting paid and stationed in FL doesnt really seem like a hit.

unless you still want to be part of the action. it could be seen as a polite way to be sent into retirement with a healthy pension and an emeritus role. did they give him a watch?
