No phone usage in cars

First off it would be almost impossible to enforce.  The no texting laws and no cell phone for 16 year old drivers isnt enforced.  Secondly do we really need told what we can and cant do in te car?  No cell phone but I can still read the paper?  There doesnt need to be a law for every problem.

Re: No phone usage in cars

Massachusetts enacted a similar law at the beginning of the year. I don't interact with teenagers, so I can't say if it's been a deterrent. As far as enforcement goes, I think I've seen one citation in the city in which I work, as an ancillary charge to a driving with a revoked license charge.
I will say I'm probably like a lot of other people who tend to get annoyed when I'm behind someone in traffic who is clearly distracted by the cell phone in their ear. The Blue Tooth seems like an OK option. Tough call.

Re: No phone usage in cars

I talk on the phone alot while driving.  Most of the time it is on speaker phone.  It seems safer then when I clip a hang nail or read paper work.  I do limit texting to when I am stopped.  It is a violation to text and drive for anyone here.  I am not sure how I would go about proving that someone was doing it unless they admitted to it and unless it caused an accident I am not sure I would care.  I believe it is also current a violation to talk on the ohone in construction zones or school zones.
