Sveum Hired by Cubs

I think he was the Milwaukee hitting coach. He was in the hunt for the Boston job, but turned it down to manage the Cubs, who are not going to be contending without wholesale changes in 2012. I think that speaks volumes about how others view the Boston job right now.

It's a tough job. The local media's negativity is still a dominating presence, and the fans who have been there before 2004 still have a fatalistic streak they can't shake.
And from what I've read, working for Larry Lucchino is an unpleasant alternative to coal mining.

Re: Sveum Hired by Cubs

It's purely speculation, but I've seen suggestions that Sveum might be able to lure Fielder to Chicago.

They better have an XXXX-L pair of blue pajamas.

I would think he would be prefered over Pujols.  I could also see Fielder buying into the idea of being "the man" in Chicago more so then Pujols.  He will hit 60hr a year in that park.

Krispy Kremes, Hostess Cupcakes and a gallon of Ben & Jerry's ice cream would all qualify for a vegeterian diet.

And cheese pizzas.  Lots and lots of cheese pizzas.

Re: Sveum Hired by Cubs

Former Cardinals coach Dave McKay is the new first base coach of the Chicago Cubs.

Entering his 27th season as a big league coach, McKay also will work with base runners and outfielders. He was on the Cardinals' coaching staff for all 16 seasons that Tony La Russa managed in St. Louis.

Re: Sveum Hired by Cubs

I have to be honest, First Base coach isn't really something I would have changed had I been Matheny. Why did McKay get fired? I guess my question is, how on earth do you get fired as a first base coach ever.

Job descriptions:
Holler "Back!" when the pitcher is throwing to first.
Holler "Turn and look" or "hold here" or "take 2" when a player is coming around 1st base.
End of job description.....

There's not a lot that I think I could be competent enough to handle in MLB, but first base coach is one of them.

You also have to know how to operate a stopwatch in order to time the pitcher's move. So it's not like you can just put a trained orangutan over there.
Wait ... orangutans have opposable thumbs.
So it's not like you can just put a trained elephant over there.

Re: Sveum Hired by Cubs

I am sure McKay either got fire for being a TLR loyalist or because Matheny wanted to bring in his own followers.  I forget who is even going to be the Cardinals first base coach.  I am sure their coaching positions are more important in terms of support staff for the manager then what they do while the team bats.

not really.  their big toe is far more opposable than is there thumb, which is just a little stub.

Matheny hasn't been assigned a number yet? I wonder if they'll give him his old #22, his older #44, or they'll retire the latter for Corey Patterson.

The selection process?  Humans get a close call for their money about 70,000 years ago when the Lake Toba supervolcano nearly wipes them out.  But they come roaring back as fully modern humans and wipe out the orangutans by about 2040 AD.  Fully opposable thumbs beat out the stubs by a landslide.

Show some love and we may see Pujols back here.

Let's face it, we all suspect he won't be worth $250/10, and if he starts out with 2-3 down years, the Angles might be willing to let him go at a loss.  It's happened before.
