Is there a date after which the Cardinals would no longer receive draft pick compensation for Edwin Jackson?
According to Rotoworld, he's seeking a 5 year deal for $15-17M/year. That's insane. I'd hate to see the Cardinals lose their compensation because Boras is delusional as to Jackson's value.

Hmm, I don't think there is a timetable.

Trying to understand the question.
Are you suggesting he might go unsigned, and if he does, we won't get our compensatory draft pick?
In any event, my gut feeling is that one of Boras's talents is to know how to maximize the value of his clients for himself. He probably has the market for starting pitchers mapped out and suspects the market for Jackson will still be there in February and March, and somehow by holding out, that will make more money for Boras, either through signing Jackson or else through increased value for one of his other clients.

Not suggesting, asking if there's a deadline after which that's the case.

No doubt, but Boras isn't infallable. You may recall he employed a similar strategy with Jeff Weaver and Lohse before he signed his first contract with the Cardinals. Both left a lot of money on the table. I seem to remember he missed badly with Johnny Damon as well.
I just don't want it to cost the Cardinals a draft pick.

In hindsight, it's too bad the Cards didn't offer Pujols their best deal before the arbitration deadline, and tell Pujols to give thumbs up or down on it.

why would that have helped?

They did, and they will. At this point the Cardinals hold their own first round pick, the Angels first round pick, supplemental picks for Pujols and Dotel and another potential pick for Jackson.

That was a no brainer. The trick is to offer arbitration to guy that you know wont accept or dont mind if they do accept. Dotel was the only guy they offered to that might accepted. If he did then the Cardinals wouldnt have lost because they would have got him for a seemingly fair price and only one year. Pujols and Jackson would have never accepted a one year arbitration deal. If they did the Cardinals would have been very happy no matter the cost.

But they didn't do it, did they? Or did they, and I am just not remembering clearly?

After completely missing the market for Ryan Madson, it looks like Boras may have done the same for Edwin Jackson. From Rotoworld:
According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Yankees are only interested in a one-year deal for Edwin Jackson or Hiroki Kuroda.
Yankees general partner Hal Steinbrenner met with Jackson's agent, Scott Boras, at the owners' meetings this week, but has yet to approve expanding payroll to add a significant player. The 28-year-old right-hander is reportedly seeking a five-year deal worth about $15 million per season, so Boras will likely continue to shop around for now. Kuroda, who is also drawing interest from the Red Sox, is reportedly looking for a deal worth $12-13 million per season. Sherman suspects that the Bombers will wait out the market, perhaps signing Jackson, Kuroda or even Bartolo Colon to a one-year pact.

Cant go wrong with Jackson on a one year deal either. I believe this is going to be the new trend. Next years market is stronger then this ones. I think teams have learned you dont give the Kyle Loshe's 4/40 deals.
