I've heard numerous sources predict the Yankees to make a run at this guy, and my obvious question is simply, why not us?
I don't expect we can match the numbers the Yankees are throwing out there, but seriously, we should be offering something to the man. If we're moving into next season without Lohse and without Penny (and honestly I can't see either in the rotation next season), then who is 4/5 going to be? Why not throw Cliff Lee in there for cash, putting a legitimate triple threat on the mound, and you have Jaime Garcia as the 4 man?
I know there's a lot of "OMG the Cards can't do that! We can't spend the money!!!!" type countering. My counter is, why in the hell not? We fill the seats. Pay Pujols, get Lee, get Uggla, get something on this club. Resigning Pujols is a must, but adding to this team is just as necessary.
So thoughts on the Cardinals in Free Agency? Predictions? Anyone? Take a stab at it, be Nostradamus!

Where do you think Lohse is going? He's under contract for 2 more years at a cost of about $11M per year and has full no-trade protection.
I doubt there's much of a chance he ends up anywhere other than St. Louis.

The only way Loshe isnt in the rotation is if he is on the DL. I will just be happy if they can manage to resing Pujols.

Would love to see Cliff Lee in STL, but they have his pinstripes waiting for him already in NYY. I think we need upgrades at SS and 3B, and we need to find a place (3B or OF) to put Allen Craig.
If I'm Lee's agent, I have him trying on Red Sox caps during the Yankees series. It probably would have added 2 years and $50M to the deal he's ultimately going to get from the Yankees.
The Cardinals have all but said they intend to give Freese another shot at third. Presumably they intend to have someone capable of taking over in case Freese goes down again. And I would include second base as a position of need. They can't handle another year of Skippy playing second base like he's trying to play ping pong with a hand grenade.

After the Teixeira fiasco, the Red Sox finally had enough of being used to drive up the price for the Yankees. If they make a play for Lee, they probably won't court him publicly. They have other issues that need to be addressed - like third base, two of the three outfield spots and how to get Ortiz to pass PED tests before May 1.

And you said that Ryan is a goner. Your statements made it seem like that was first on the list. I would assume from that they would rather put up with another year of Skip on the field then another year of Ryan in the clubhouse.

My guess is that we have about as much chance of seeing Dizzy Dean in the rotation as we do of seeing Cliff Lee. And I don't think he would be filling the no. 4 or 5 slot if for some reason he decided he wanted to be a Cardinal more than he wanted to own a large section of Manhattan. In the event of the latter miracle Carpenter and Wainwright might want to reserve a Tennis Court for opening day next year.

I would have liked to have seen Cliff Lee starting for the Cardinals on Wednesday, but I have not entertained the notion that the Cards would cough up the money for him, and Pujols, and fill the other holes. But I think he would be a great fit with the Cards, and it is too bad that the Cards have gotten into this sorry state where we miss the playoffs 3 years out of 4, and get our ass kicked the one year we made it. Piecing together my own vibe with what Fors's friend said, this is my hunch for what the DeWitt, Mozeliak, Luhnow, La Russa hydra feels is their priority, in order:
1. Resign Pujols
2. Replace Ryan
3. Replace Schumaker
4. Legitimate Plan B for Freese
5. Left-handed help for bullpen
Realistically, a rotation featuring Carp, Wainwright, Garcia, and two other guys should be very good, and a batting order featuring Pujols, Holliday, Rasmus, Freese, and two other guys, with Molina, someone else, and a pitcher rounding things out should be very good.
Frankly, except for the middle infield, I think there's very little wrong with our team, other than their lack of ability to make roster adjustments on the fly, as mandated by the situation: injuries, opportunity, etc., but that, by itself, is a huge failing in today's game, and one that seems to be deeply ingrained in our organization for some reason that is beyond me.

If Mrs. Lee gets a vote, the Yankees are in trouble ...

I don't know which was the biggest turn-off on New York -- the description of Yankee fan behavior in the article or the interviews with New Yorkers that follow the Perez comments.
