Tyler Greene to get a shot. Reading the article, and the comments from Skip... Man I know Skip isn't the best player I've ever seen, but if there was a Hall of Fame catagory for being a good teammate, he'd get my vote. He's an outfielder who can't ever seem to get to play OF, so they ask him to move to 2B, he's not amazing, but he can fill the spot. Now they are looking at other options for who will start there, and he's just signed a 2 year deal where he took a paycut, and his attitude and comments are all resiliently positive. "I'll be ready, wherever and whenever they need me, I'll be ready."
Good guy that Skip, just a hell of a good guy...
PS, was super cool when I met him too. I understand most Major Leaguers are cool to the kids, but I was 34, and he was super cool with me. Acted like he was honored I knew his name, and was thrilled that I said hi, etc... Just a good guy.

Second base is always an offseason topic for the Cardinals. I find it odd to give Greene such an inside route. I would be offended by it if there were other options. I am kind of glad they see Descalso as a utility player and not an everyday guy. He was a fun story in 2011 but I would be worried of overexposer putting him in the everyday lineup. I think there is going to be plenty of playing time in the middle infield. Greene and Furcal are not going to play 162 games. With Greene being out of options the FO might just be putting pressure on him to preform because they dont want to make that decision.

I still think having Schu hitting .275+ from 2B outweighs the defensive drawbacks of having him at 2B, but that's just my personal opinion. The reason Greene got the chance is because of his great AAA numbers, which are Schu's MLB numbers with some pop that Schu doesn't have.

Yesterday's Post-Dispatch story seemed to suggest that Greene is getting more than just a shot. It sounds like it's Greene's job to lose.

.....or just enough rope !

Obviously, the current General Manager and the previous Manager had diverging opinions on Greene's value. Let's see how Matheny plays this one ...

I dont really understand why they have gold spooned the position to him. Even if there plan is to have him play most the games there I dont know why they put that info out like they have before the spring training even really started. Why not at least give the illusion that he has to work for it. I think there is an angle but I am not smart enough to know what that is.
I am sure Greene was always looking over his shoulder when TLR was around. Maybe these stories are to settle him in.

FWIW, Greene has a raw skill set that no one else has. They see the potential for a guy to hit for a decent average, hit 10+ HR and steal 30+ bases. Whether he can actually do that is another story, but I don't blame them for wanting to find out. Not to mention, he's still an inexpensive option which they're going to need if they're really paying Molina $15M/year.

Yeah I know Greene could be one of the most dynamic second baseman in the league if he could catch onto performing at the major league level. I would rather him win the job over Delscalso and I think we have all seen enough of Skip to know he isnt the best move for now or the future. I am just suprised they are being so public about him having the inside path. It isnt a move TLR would have allowed and maybe after all the years of him I am just used to hearing the same things every spring. You know, the compitition is good line.

I suspect you hit on the reason in your earlier post. Everything we've read about Greene seemed to make it sound as though the uncertainty of his status under TLR made it difficult for him to perform. Perhaps they're just trying to get him to relax by telling him it's his job to lose.
Obviously for the team's sake, if he can produce anything close to the numbers he produced in Memphis it would be fantastic. Especially while he's making little more than the league minimum.

Good point, and I think by telling him he's going to play second base, it erases any anxiety he'll have about playing three different positions. I think Tone even stuck him in the outfield at one point a couple of years ago.
What becomes of Skippy is the obvious question. He's not a late-inning defensive replacement, and if you're going to hand or give the inside track for the second base job to Greene, that kind of eliminates the possibility of a platoon, since Skip would be getting most of the playing time against righty starters.
Skippy is still the best defensive outfielder on the team, but I'd hate to see him take at bats away from Craig, when he comes back. In a related matter, I think that link Fors posted the other day has Strauss mentioning that Craig might be back sooner than the eariler prognosis. As soon as that happens, he needs to play every day.

Barring an injury, Craig doesn't have an everyday job until 2013. Beltran has made it pretty clear he doesn't think he can play center field often. For the money they're making, neither Beltran nor Berkman will sit more than occasionally. Craig's knee led the team to finding an alternative that, unfortunately for Craig, filled the only position available for Craig to play.

Oh come on. What are the odds Beltran isn't in the lineup for all 162?!? Like nil. Maybe less than nil. Look out, Ripken.

It sucks that Craig that doesnt have an everyday job. He has a high ceiling and I hate to see him wait another year on the bench. At the same time it is nice to have a guy ready to go that can fill in for Beltran, Berkman and Holliday without losing much. I think Craig will find plenty of time. All three of those guys are injury risk. Craig is going to be eased into play at the begining of the season so he wont need alot of playing time early when all three are healthy. I think it will work out fine and Craig will find his at bats.
