I will need to dig out my halloween gallows out of the closet. What's Matheny's number again, the strawman will need to look authentic....

Good golly Matt Adams is large.

"What's Matheny's number again"
He wore number 22 when he played in St. Louis. I assume he's taken it again, unless the Cardinals retired it for Joe Thurston.

Saw a report in the PD a couple days ago that Furcal was experiencing (soreness ?) and would have a lighter schedule , nothing on Berk , both are expected to play against Boston .....

Hummel:
"Unable to find the edges of the strike zone in the first inning, Miller became more assertive and aggressive with his fastball in the second inning and the results followed. Miller pitched a perfect second inning on just nine pitches. Seven of those pitches were strikes. He got one sky-high fly ball to the first baseman, a busted-bat groundout to the shortstop and a weak grounder to third base."

Good news. Tomorrow's game is in Jupiter, I think, and they've traveled the last two days. It kind of makes sense to not make the old guys get on a bus.

Cards 3, Pesky Gnats 1
"Veteran closer Brad Lidge, recast this season as a setup righthander and sage in the Nationals' bullpen, came into the seventh inning with a 1-1 tie. He'll leave it with a deficit. Daniel Descalso, having tied the game earlier with his homer, started the rally with a single off Lidge. Descalso then scored when the Nats infield failed to convert a double play. An errant throw allowed every one to be safe, including Matt Adams at first after bouncing the ball to the second baseman.
Tyler Greene followed Adams with an RBI single that put the Cardinals ahead 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh"

From El D's chat:
Joe- I have such a good feeling about Matt Adams, reminds me of another guy we had 11,12 years ago that made the team due to Bobby Bonilla getting injured. any chances of lightning striking twice? Can Adams hit his way to making the case he heads north? Thanks.

Sir, I'm going to pretend you didn't compare any current prospect player to arguably one of the two most transcendant hitters of the past 30-40 years. Do you really want a calamity to occur for Adams to be force-fed to the majors? Best case scenario for Adams, he makes the team as a bench bat until Craig returns. But even that's a reach.

Does one celebrate the first non-loss of one's managerial career?

Watching the recording of the Mets game yesterday. First of all, the wind is blowing in at about 30 mph. Holliday hit a ball on the screws in the first inning and it fell short of the warning track. Santana also benefitted from a huge strike zone. Reports of him returning to his Cy Young form may be a little optimistic. He maxxed out at 89 mph, and the Cardinals were hitting the ball hard, just right at people.
Westbrook also benefitted from the wide zone, and he still managed to walk Adam Leowen, a converted pitcher who played in Triple A last year, on four pitches.
I like the way Ryan Jackson looks at short. He's got good instincts, and he gets rid of the ball quickly.
Terry Collins isn't doing the Cardinals any favors. He's followed up Santana, who I think threw nothing but fastballs, with R.A. Dickey, whose 55 mph knuckleball is dancing like MC Hammer in this wind.
