Goold:
"PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright has repeatedly said throughout this spring that with each step he feels like "a normal pitcher" or "my old self." Manager Mike Matheny has used those same descriptions to detail how the righty is "being treated like a normal pitcher" now more than a year removed from Tommy John surgery.
And, just like normal, Wainwright pitched around some hiccups, had stuff to rally when behind in the count and was able to find a way to pitch three scoreless innings without his sharpest of stuff.
Wainwright used 40 pitches (25 strikes) to get nine outs from the New York Mets this afternoon at DigiDom Park. Wainwright searched for his command in his second inning, but he was able to rally in the third and get three outs on 10 pitches, eight of which were strikes. His only strikeout came in the third inning as he fanned Josh Satin with a curveball.
Wainwright had to pitch around an infield error, a walk, and a groundball base hit. He erased two of those baserunners with immediate double-play balls.
In his first appearance of the spring, Wainwright touched 94 mph on the gun at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers, Fla. The Cardinals also saw him sit around 90 mph or 91 mph with his fastball. He and Matheny both made mention of the velocity as a positive sign.
This afternoon, the stadium gun had Wainwright hovering around 88 mph and 90 mph with his fastball.
There could be any number of reasons for the difference. First, the guns are not all the same around the Grapefruit League. Second, Wainwright is making his second start and the adrenaline has faded while he works on arm strength for later in the month and the regular season. Third, Wainwright had his schedule altered so that he's throwing on three days of rest instead of the standard four like others this week."
It should be noted that Darling said last week the Mets' gun is slow.
