Hummel intimating Linebrink makes the club. Backup catcher will be Cruz or Anderson, and with Skippy and Craig on the shelf, the other two position slots will be filled by Carpenter, and either Komatsu or Robinson.

I was going to post on this earlier. I thought it was pretty interesting. From looking at the box scores I thought Linebrink would make the club. When you bring a guy like him in the expectation is that if he does his job when call upon he gets the job. I sure injuries and demotions will get Sanchez recalled sooner then later.
I see the quicken pace to Craig's rehab being a good sign for Robinson. Someone will have to go when Craig comes back and that wont be long off. So why keep Komatsu knowing they will have to let him go in a month. It would be better just to do it now. The interesting thing will be when Skip tries to return. Carpenter has way more value then Skip at this point. I hate to see Skip push him off the roster.
The bench seems to be a big improvement this year. With guys like Carpenter, Craig, Delcalso/Greene and Cruz on the bench I think it offers alot of freshness.

I worry about defense at backup catcher. That they've already run Yadi out there a lot this spring isn't a good sign. Carpenter's drawback is he can only play the corner positions. Presuming Carpenter and Komatsu are in Miami on April 4, this isn't the team LaRussa would have picked. Cora would have gotten the Miguel Cairo/Abe Nunez/Joe Thurston/Lawn Gnome/Julio Lugo/Felipe Lopez wizened veteran gig. If there are things I won't miss about LaRussa, that's probably first on the list.

"Carpenter's drawback is he can only play the corner positions."
Didn't I read that Carpenter was playing the outfield? Or by corner positions, did you mean to include the corner outfield spots?
I'm not sure that Schumaker's return spells doom for Carpenter. Assuming health, wouldn't the bench look like:
Craig (LF, RF, 1B, maybe 3B)
Schu (OF, 2B)
Cruz (C, 1B, 3B)
Descalso (2B, SS, 3B)
Carpenter (1B, 3B, LF, RF)
Am I missing someone?

I guess not. Hummel reports Komatsu has to clear waivers if he gets sent down, which probably gives him the edge over Carpenter and presumably the primary reason Chambers is starting the season in Memphis.

I never understood what drew them to Komatsu. If he had been right handed, I would have understood, but I'm not sure what he adds that Chambers didn't already bring.
Yes, we got back Saturday night. Just in time for me to find a bunch of beakers walking around downtown St. Louis. I must be doing well with anger management because I managed not to run over any of them.
I'm going to fucking puke if that team wins a national championship. I'd rather endure 4 more years of Obama than give that obnoxious fan base the satisfaction of winning a title.

Traffic lights and crosswalks must have been a new experience for them.
I hope this doesn't jeopardize anything with anyone on this board, but I'm going to have to pull for Kansas, by default. If there's a worse person in college sports than Rick Pitino, it's John Calipari, and I'm not going to root for an Ohio team.

I dont think that should give Komatsu the edge. As Fors stated Carpenter/Komastu is likely the first to go when Skip returns. Your going to have to deal with losing them at some point. Might as well deal with it now. Plus Komastu doesnt really project as much more then a 4th outfielder. I wouldnt go through alot of trouble to keep someone who can be replaced by anyone on the Memphis roster.

I think it was Strauss in his chat last week who wrote that Komatsu gives them strategic options because of his speed. But you're correct. I think it's just an instance of them not wanting to part with a player until they have to.
Westbrook was finally scored upon yesterday, but it took the Mets seven innings to get to him. Only one walk, which is a good sign. They really need him to not be a cementhead this year.

Part of the thing with rule 5's is that teams see it as playing the lottery. You would expect someone who hung around in the minors for as long as a rule 5 has to to be somewhat servicable. That can be of value depending on the teams situation, like Luna was for the Cardinals. But I think the goal is to land Johan Santana. It rarely happens and most of the time the best stories end up like Barton. I cool flash in the pan. I dont think the Cardinals have to worry about Komatsu turning into a 200 hit machine like Suzuki and they have plenty of minor league outfielers. They probable took him for spring insurance incase Beltran or Jay got hurt. Centerfield is a area the Cardinals are thin at but I dont think they are thin enough to keep him on the roster.

Strauss said last week that Westbrook got himself into better shape than he was in 2011. Apparently you can't just gorge yourself on garbage then expect to be well-conditioned. WHO KNEW???

The old "I feel better then I have in years" line.
He is pitching for a 8.5 million dollar option or a job in the majors. He has something to prove this year.
