A little help please...

I realize that I'm not as smart as a baseball manager/former broadcaster, like Bobby Valentine, but maybe together we can figure this out.  This quote is only partly related to the main story, but it grabbed my attention,

"I don't think he's as physically or emotionally into the game as he has been in the past for some reason,'' Valentine said Sunday. "But [on Saturday] it seemed, you know, he's seeing the ball well, got those two walks, got his on-base percentage up higher than his batting average, which is always a good thing, and he'll move on from there."

Am I missing something?  Is there a scenario in which your OBP can be lower than your batting average?  Is this maybe a Japanese baseball thing?

Or is Bobby Valentine just an idiot?

Re: A little help please...

Yes, it can be done. I believe it has to do with sac flies.

Re: A little help please...

Yahoo stats do show his BA and OBP at .167 and .160, respectively, on April 13th. This after a 2-for-4 game with no walks raising both from .100/.100. He was 2-for-20 before Friday, so his BA follows (4-for-24 = .167), but apparently a sac fly raised the OBP denominator to 25 instead of 24. So, given the difference in what qualify as at-bats between the two measures, I guess it's possible.

Edit: What TK said.

Re: A little help please...

I guess OBP is based off of PA not AB and BA of course is based of AB.  So a sac fly counts as a PA, lowers your OBP and doesnt effect your BA.

I doubt it happens much because one would have to have more sac flies then walks because walks raise your OBP and dont efect your BA.

Re: A little help please...

OK, I take back what I said. Bobby Valentine is a genius.

And I'm glad he's the Sawx' genius.

Who the hell is Bobby Valentine to criticize the Sainted Yooooook, anyway? Yooooook is a grinder, and grinders never stop grinding.
