Minor League Thread

"Shelby Miller, the Cardinals’ top pitching prospect and two-time minor-league pitcher of the year, made his Class AAA debut Sunday afternoon for Memphis. The righty allowed four runs on seven hits through his three innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out four. First baseman Matt Adams, the Cardinals’ minor-league player of the year in 2011, also made his debut with Triple-A Memphis this past week, and the slugger hit a home run in each of his first three games.

Trevor Rosenthal also made his regular-season debut this past weekend. Rosenthal allowed two runs (only one of which was earned) on one hit and one walk in four innings. He struck out four."

Also Sanchez had some trouble.  .02 innings, 4 hits, 4 runs and 2 BB

Memphis stats

Matt Adams-3/7/.413 in 46 AB
Zack Cox - 1/1/.128 in 39 AB
Bryan Anderson- 0/0.027 in 37 AB
Ryan Jackson - 1/5/.250 in 44 AB
Pete Kozma - 1/2/.250 in 40 AB

Sanchez has worked 4.1 innings in 5 games.  After allow 6 runs in his first two appearances he hasnt allowed a ER in the last 3 outings.
Miller has started 2 games: first start, 3 innings 4 runs.  Second start, 5 innings 4 runs.  Looks to be having trouble with the HR ball allowing 3.

Springfield stats

Kolten Wong - 1/8/.368 in 38 AB
Oscar Tavares - 2/11/.311 in 45 AB

Trevor Rosenthal has started two games losing both.  8.2 innings 7 ER.
Jogn Gast has started and won his first two games.  14 innings 2 ER.

"Bryan Anderson- 0/0.027 in 37 AB"

Wow ... I think that's the lowest batting average I've ever seen. At any level.

Re: Minor League Thread

The Cardinals had a catcher at Springfield for a couple of years named Nick Derba and I believe he hit around .130.

Re: Minor League Thread

Derba is still there.  I believe he is their leading BA guy.  Not sure how many AB he has.

What is the opinion on Robert Stock move from catching to pitching?  Seems like it is a good move as his hitting career wasnt moving along.

I think he was always destined to wind up back on the mound.

Re: Minor League Thread

Seems like a waste to even try him at catcher.  He never really hit and his college number seemed to point to him being a better pitcher then hitter.  I assume that club let guy try out hitting that are better suited for pitching just to make them happy and save their arm alittle.

Re: Minor League Thread

Miller struck out 6 and walked 2 in 5 innings against the I-Cubs today. Given the lack of trust in Salas and McClellan, the heavy reliance on Boggs and Motte with no Lance Lynn, at what point do they bring Miller up to begin a bullpen apprenticeship? I say tomorrow.

Re: Minor League Thread

I am not ready for them to give up on Salas.  As veb pointed out, his SO/BB ratio is still good.  If Greene would have knocked down that grounder last night like a major leaguer should Salas would have been fine.  Plus I think Miller is rocking and rolling in Memphis.  I would guess he is the first call up.  Or they get Oswalt and Lynn move back to the pen.  They need to package Greene and McCellan for a #3 at taco bell.

•The Cardinals have signed Clay Zavada to a minor league contract and released left-hander R.J. Swindle, according to the Pacific Coast League's transactions page.  Zavada, 27, was recently let go by the Reds.

Re: Minor League Thread

With the All-Star Break upon us and little else to talk about, thought it a decent time to rekindle this thread.  A few notable items.

Baseball America released its Mid-season Top 50 prospects.  Four Cardinals made the list (pre-season ranking in parenthesis)

18. Oscar Tavares (74)
20. Shelby Miller (8)
26. Carlos Martinez (27)
44. Kolten Wong (93)

Oscar Tavares is putting together a ridiculous season.  His current slash line is .322/.372/.596 and he's developed power hitting 17 HR and driving in 63.  He's been playing centerfield in Springfield, but seeing him last night in the Futures Game, he looks like a corner outfielder.

Speaking of the Futures Games, here's what our old friend Keith Law had to say about Tavares:

"Every swing Taveras takes threatens to rupture the fabric of the cosmos, and his ability to take such a forceful hack and still make contact with balls outside the zone earns comparisons to Vladimir Guerrero and the pre-Cub version of Alfonso Soriano. Taveras' raw power in BP was much more than he showed last year in the Arizona Fall League, so that home run spike this year -- he has 17 already in Double-A after hitting eight in an equivalent amount of playing time in A-ball last year -- looks very real."

Very quietly, Carlos Martinez has put together a nice season and recently earned a promotion to AA.  He has a combined ERA of 2.82 and has a K/BB ratio of 52/14 in 54 innings.  At the risk of jinxing him, Martinez has yet to give up a home run this season.  He doesn't turn 21 until after the minor league season ends.

Kolten Wong continues to hit.  Current line is .310/.384/.439.  But man is that dude small.  He can't be more than 5'5-5'6.  They showed him standing in line before the Futures Games last night and he barely made it to the other players' shoulders.

Zack Cox finally started to hit.  He hit .377 in June and is now up to .258 for the season.  Remember, they gave him a major league contract when he signed, so I think he has to stick with the team by 2014.

Cox is in Memphis, or Spfld?

What happens if he doesn't? Does he become a FA?

Re: Minor League Thread

Yes, Cox is in Springfield.

Because they gave him a major league deal, they have to use an option to send him to the minors each year. He'll be out of options in 2014, I think. So he'll be like Greene is this season.

Sucky at the plate and error prone in the field?

"Cardinals have him listed as 5'9'' but I don't think he is that tall."

No chance.  Like I said, he barely made it to the shoulders of the players he was standing between.  I'm 6'5"  My son is almost 5'10 and he comes to my top lip.  Unless the players Wong was standing between were 6'8" or taller, I'd say Wong is inches shorter than my son.

You should have him try basketball.

Cardinals have Skip Schumaker listed at 5'10"

Seems too tall to me, I met him, and he seemed more like 5'8".

You met him a few months ago.  He had his physical for football last month and the doctor measured him at 5' 9 1/2".

He played his last baseball game of the season last night.  He bought new baseball pants in April.  At the time they went down to the top of his shoes.  Last night he had about 3 inches of sock showing.

Bob has been growing 4-5 inches a year since he was 8.  It's insane.

Here's a picture of Bob with his team.  I realize that unless you know the other boys, this doesn't really tell you much, but it provides some perspective.
