HOUSTON _Cardinals right fielder Carlos Beltran, who had a scheduled day off on Thursday, is receiving an unscheduled one tonight as the Cardinals open a series with the Houston Astros.
Beltran said he felt something in the muscle in the back of his right leg, near the hamstring area, while doing some flexibility drills on Thursday. Since he wasn't playing Thursday, Beltran said, "I did a little more and I woke up this morning a little bit stiff.
"It's not bad. I told Mike (manager Mike Matheny) I could go out and play but we're going to play 20 games in a row later this month, so he felt it wasn't going to hurt me to get a day (off)."
Beltran said he expected to play in this three-game series. Meanwhile, first baseman Lance Berkman, eligible to come off the disabled list today, won't be doing so, although he plans to test his strained left calf with a little running this evening.
Berkman said he would stop short of calling it "scampering.
"I'll be lumbering at first," he said, "then we'll upgrade to scampering."
Righthander Kyle Lohse will attempt to join righthander Lance Lynn at 5-0 when he makes his sixth start tonight. Allen Craig will play first in Berkman's stead and hit fourth. Matt Carpenter will be in right field for Beltran, batting seventh.
Outtfielder Erik Komatsu, a Rule 5 draft from last year's winter meetings whom the Cardinals hoped to pass through waivers, was claimed by Minnesota. He will join the Twins tonight in Seattle.
Those players drafted by major-league teams at the December meetings must spend the entire season with their club or, if placed on waivers, can be claimed by another team, before the first team can send him to the minors. The Twins also must Komatsu on their roster.
The Cardinals, who designated Komatsu for assignment on Tuesday had hoped to send him to Class AAA Memphis.

So he's going from a Major League team to a Triple A team, but not back to Double A?

It's been a struggle. It always is when you're watching the Astros' feed. Hey, let's talk with Rusty Staub for an inning. Then let's have the chick with the mic interview the chairman of the Texas Rodeo for awhile. Then let's listen to Brownie cackle at everything J.D. says that's even remotely amusing. Oh look. There's a little girl eating ice cream. She's dribbling it down her shirt. Isn't she a cutie? Then we have to give out the "Fan of the Game" award. Hey, there's a fat guy with no shirt on dancing to YMCA. Isn't that funny? Hey, don't forget to show up tomorrow for fireworks night. And then on May 19 there's a concert by Styx after the game. And don't forget to show the crowd doing the wave ... Huh? There's a 1-run ballgame?? Does it really matter??
