I can live with getting creamed by Kershaw on Saturday, but Friday and Sunday stung.

And I know he's playing on one leg, but if Beltran doesn't play Kennedy's single into a triple ...

Re: 5/20 GC

I think Matheny is either 0-6 or 0-7 in 1-run games. I'm just sayin' ....

Unbelievable.

Today's lesson: If you're going to pitch around a guy, pitch around him. Don't throw him three wide ones and then try to get back into the count with a cripple.

Matheny and Lilliquist are completely unfit to manage a major league pen at this time. You don't go 2-7 in one-run games on bad luck alone. I've been skeptical of the pen for weeks now, but there's a lot to question about some of these decisions.

Re: 5/20 GC

Scrabble's numbers never look bad but he seems to get into trouble alot.  Tonight it looks like he paid.  Was it bad usage?

It was more like bad strategy. He went to 3-0 on Van Slyke and it looked like he was going to walk him, but then he threw him a strike and the kid hit it out of the ballpark. It wasn't a bad pitch, AP. It looked like a slider on the outer half of the plate, and it was down. Van Slyke just went out an got it.
I would have had no problem with Scrabble going after Van Slyke, but once he got to 2-0, just put him on and pitch to Loney, who is hitting like .175 against lefties.

"2-7 in one-run games"

That's what I get for listening to ESPN ...

You were partially correct. They are 0-6 in one-run games on the road.

This is the same team that walked James "I'm a first baseman slugging .367" Loney to get to AJ Ellis.

La Russa would have done the same thing. What would have been different is LaRussa would have had Motte in the game at that point, not Salas. You don't send out your fifth best reliever and cross your fingers he's going to get three outs in the ninth inning. Once you tie a game on the road, you work backwards - Motte in the ninth, Boggs in the 10th and then Salas.
I don't mind that Matheny does unconventional things, and for the most part what he's done has worked out. It just seemed like everything he tried this weekend blew up. I thought the two biggest mistakes offensively last night were starting the runners at first and second with no outs and two strikes on Holliday in the first inning, and then Lohse swinging at ball four with the bases loaded and no outs in the second. The second one you kind of have to live with because he's a pitcher, but Billingsley psyche is so fragile, if those two innings go differently, the Cardinals could have put up five runs and knocked him out of the game.

I think he's been downright reckless on the base paths at times. As you said, last night's double steal was bad.

La Russa would've definitely walked Loney, but I would have been all over his ass for it, too. There's just no need to be careful with James Loney. I'm confident that one of us here could get James Loney (and over half the Dodgers lineup) out.

Please tell me that didnt happen and no you dont have to live with it.  There is a guy who stands in faul ground on the thirdbase side that is supposed to offer advice.

"Please tell me that didnt happen"

It did. I don't expect the pitcher to get a hit, but he ought to at least be able to lay off a pitch in the dirt.

3-2. I think Lohse had him 3-0, but I'd have to look it up.

Re: 5/20 GC

Maybe it isnt a crime.  Hard to fault a guy for swing on a 3-2 count, even if it is a patcher.
