Olympics thread

Didn't know where to put this one, but I guess it's a combination of a "current event" and "odd" since the North Koreans sent a team.
Up front, I usually start out being very cynical about the Olympics, and then I'm gradually sucked in.
So I thought I'd save myself some time this year by jumping on board right away. I'm not sure what the attraction is. The magnitude of the event itself? The jingoistic allure of rooting for my countrymen? Watching sports I'm not usually not accustomed to watching? The purity of (mostly) non-professional competition?
Or maybe it's just that Alex Morgan is a hot babe.

Re: Olympics thread

It would probably help if I were British, but this is one of the more confusing opening ceremonies I've ever seen. Why is there a freakin' grassy knoll in the middle of the stadium?

Apparently, you don't have to be in tip-top condition to compete in archery.

Of course I found it awesome.  USA's team was very young.  Looked like none of them were over 25.  They missed a couple shots that cost them.  The ending was in our favor but it was pretty dramatic.

I was watching the South Korean team at the time. The Olive Garden has apparently made its way to Seoul.

The U.S. Women's Volleyball team is impressive. There's a tall, slender African-American woman who jumps so high she might hit her head on a rafter.

Re: Olympics thread

It really doesnt bug me that Phelps is not winning.  Looks like he should have spent less time over the last 4 years smoking pot and more time in the pool.

Re: Olympics thread

This brand of ping-pong is a lot easier than the version we played in college. Our objective was not to spill the beer we had in our hand.

Yeah. And to plunk the ball into the other guy's beer as often as possible. Or was it NOT to?

Are these women in the pool?  Their shoulders are as wide as mine.

After a few games, it really didn't matter.

Re: Olympics thread

I feel badly for the World Champion gymnastics girl who didn't make it to the finals because she gotten beaten out by two of her teammates.
And I feel badly for me because one of the girls who made it to the finals is from Massachusetts and suddenly everyone around here is an expert analyst about the balance beam.

Re: Olympics thread

I cant get into gymnastics.  Unless someone falls I really dont see a difference in what one does over the other.  I dont find men gymnastics to be an interesting or manly sport but damn, those guys are strong.  They might be the most althletic athletes there are.  The rings and the horse thing would take so much strength that you almost have to respect what they are doing.

"Unless someone falls I really dont see a difference in what one does over the other."

Aye. I'm wary of the sports that are judged, because as you say absent a meltdown it always seems like the person or team that's supposed to win ends up winning. I watched the synchronized diving with my wife yesterday, and I swear neither one of us could tell which team was better than the other, but unless the Chinese team started doing dual belly flops, they were going to walk away with the gold medal. But I didn't turn the channel because one of the Italian divers looked really, really good in her swimsuit.

Re: Olympics thread

Was she the one that filled out the bottom half of her swimsuit more fully then the others?

That was one of the Canadian divers. The Italian woman was kind of a butterface, but everything else appeared to be in top form.

Re: Olympics thread

Do swimmers and divers not have boobs or do the suits just squash them down?

She left the firm about a year ago. Very toned, tight little body, but very little in the chest region

Re: Olympics thread

I know it's a cliche to point out the British have bad teeth, but that doesn't make it any less true. With all the advances in orthodonture, they're just being difficult at this point.
