Trade deadline crap

Getting Jaime Garcia back will be just like making a big deal at the deadline, but without having to give up anything!!!

Victorino to the Dodgers for a reliever and a minor leaguer.
Brandon League to the Dodgers for two minor leaguers.

Hmm... shoulder impingement with tearing. I'm guessing that "conservative treatment" as defined below does not apply to people who fling stuff overhand at high speed a couple thousand times a year. Will they wait until spring training starts to decide whether it healed itself?

From Wikipedia:
Impingement syndrome is usually treated conservatively, but sometimes is treated with arthroscopic surgery or open surgery.[7] Conservative treatment includes rest, cessation of painful activity, and physiotherapy focused at maintaining range of movement and avoid shoulder stiffness. NSAID's and ice packs may be used for pain relief.[3][7]
Therapeutic injections of corticosteroid and local anaesthetic may be used for persistent impingement syndrome.[7] The total number of injections is generally limited to three due to possible side effects from the corticosteroid.[3]
Corticosteroids actually cause musculoskeletal disorders,[8] which explains the low success rate of cortisone injections. Research has shown that over 90% of tendinopathies have no inflammation, thus the term tendinosis is more appropriate than tendinitis for most diagnoses.[6] For tendinosis, prolotherapy injections or cross-fiber (transverse) friction massage can be very effective.
A number of surgical interventions are available, depending on the nature and location of the pathology. Surgery may be done arthroscopically or as open surgery. The impinging structures may be removed in surgery, and the subacromial space may be widened by resection of the distal clavicle and excision of osteophytes on the under-surface of the acromioclavicular joint.[3] Also damaged rotator cuff muscles can be surgically repaired.

I believe the informal version is: "A doctor takes the junk out of your shoulder."

When does Max return to remind us that the Phillies are the franchise model the Cardinals should be following?

Rangers get Dempster for two minor leaguers, per ESPN.

Re: Trade deadline crap

I don't mind the deal. Mujica is nothing special, but neither is Zack Cox. Best case he improves his home run rate and becomes a solid middle reliever. Worst case, he bombs and they don't tender him a contract next season.

Re: Trade deadline crap

TTTIB gave up a top pitching prospect and maybe two for Broxton.

Broxton, who's eligible for free agency this winter, is owed the balance of a $4-million salary for 2012.

As for the Royals, they receive minor-league lefty reliever Donnie Joseph and right-handed starter J.C. Sulbaran. Joseph, 24, has pitched at the Double- and Triple-A levels this season, and his overall numbers are impressive: 52.1 IP, 1.72 ERA, 68 whiffs, 14 unintentional walks. Meanwhile, Sulbaran, 22, has a 4.04 ERA in 19 starts for Double-A Pensacola this season.

I would have thought they could have gotten more for Cox, but Cox kind of became this year's Brett Wallace, in the respect that they didn't really have a position for him, since Freese has him blocked at third, and Wong is a fast mover at second.

Re: Trade deadline crap

no sarcasm..  sounds like a bad trade.  Cox has to be worth more then that.  They get years of cost control and the Cardinals get a year 3 arbitration middle reliever who isnt even good.  What does Cox currently projected at?  At worst a decent bench player?

It's not that bad. I like your description of Mujica as being another McClellan, but I think he'll be better simply because he has better control. Improving his command will be the issue going forward. Mujica really isn't much different than Dotel was last year.

As far as Cox, he's lost of a ton of value. If you removed "first round pick" from his name, there wouldn't be much to get excited about. I just don't think he's going to be anything close to a starter-quality third baseman, and he doesn't play defense well enough to be a bench guy. The Marlins aren't that high on him either because they demoted him to Double-A.

The Reds paid good resources for Jonathan Broxton, who isn't pitching that much better than Mujica.

Re: Trade deadline crap

If Theo threw a chair when he lost out on Jose Contreras to the Yankees, imagine how he reacted when Soriano turned down a trade to the Giants.

Wow. How awesome is it that they still have him for '13 and '14? It feels like he's already played 10 seasons there.

Re: Trade deadline crap

Dodgers acquire Blanton and put a waiver claim on Cliff Lee.  They have 48 hours to try to work out a deal.

Damn Dodgers are all in.  Who would have thought with the state of the team just a year ago.

Re: Trade deadline crap

Honestly, I would think it's at least somewhat tempting for Philly to simply walk away from Lee's contract. I can't imagine anyone is going to give them much in return without Philly picking up a big chunk of the remaining money (something like $110M with the last year buy out). They could use the money to try to fix that putrid lineup.
