Re: 8/8 GC vs. Giants

Greene said after the game that if fans are going to boo they should just stay home. Not the smartest move.

How about if Greene stays home and we call it even?

"A 10 year old could have fielded that routine grounder that he muffed ...."

True that. But could a 10-year-old have gotten it to the shortstop quick enough to start a double play? Greene is a highly-skilled professional ... OK, he's a professional.

I'm listening to Strauss on the radio now. Apparently Greene got booed before the game even started so it was a pretty bad night.

Artie. Nomar gets to put his willy into Mia Hamm, or did (they still together?). That's gotta count for something!

Really!  If there was ever a case for DFA it would be this.

Re: 8/8 GC vs. Giants

I really don't understand the usage of Greene. Matheny doesn't trust him to bat against Jeremy Affeldt, who destroys left-handed hitters, but Mozeliak keeps him on the roster anyway. What good does it do Greene to just rot away on the bench? Matheny has clearly made Descalso the Furcal backup. Just poor roster management all around.

Re: 8/8 GC vs. Giants

Bernie's thoughts

Let's flip the scorecard over. There are some Tyler Greene notes on this side ...

* Tyler Greene was at it again Wednesday, committing an error on a sure double-play grounder to set the Giants up with two unearned runs, and a chance to blow the game open. Greene was booed by the home crowd. Unlike some, I never criticize fans for booing as long as they keep it clean. Cardinals fans, almost always supportive and forgiving, are entitled to get ticked off.

* In Greene's case, the bad mood in the seats is understandable. I get tired of writing about this, because it's as easy as piling on. But it only gets worse for Greene, and at this point I really don't put any anger down on him. He's here because the GM and the manager want him here. If you want to cast blame, there you go. Greene is what he is. He isn't going to get better. He now has 556 MLB plate appearances and is batting .218 with a .295 onbase percentage and a .329 slugging percentage.

* Greene's career OPS is .624. He made his big-league debut in 2009, and since that time he's among 439 players that have at least 500 plate appearances. Among the 439, Greene's .624 OPS ranks 410th. He puts the ball in play on only 34 percent of his swings, which ranks 418th. His strikeout rate of one every 3.89 plate appearances ranks 410th. His swing-miss rate (28.2) is 424th. His walk rate ranks 293rd.

* When he's played shortstop, Greene is an athletic but unreliable defender. The big experiment this year was to put him at 2B, but it isn't working out. According to John Dewan's Fielding Bible system, Greene is a minus 10 fielder this season. (As you probably surmised, that's bad.) His Fielding Runs Saved number is minus 7, which ranks Greene 30th among MLB second basemen. He's also 6 for 37 in his STL career as a pinch-hitter (.162) and that includes going 1 for 15 this year. Greene has speed, yes. But according to STATS LLC, Greene has made six outs on the bases this year via unforced errors, and that isn't a good number for a part-time player. Greene had some good games early in the season, but since May 6 he's batting .206 with a .550 OPS and 41 Ks in 136 at-bats.

* Greene doesn't help himself with the fan base (and perhaps with teammates) when he says things like "It's not the end of the world," when discussing his error in Wednesday's game. Greene probably didn't raise his popularity ratings when asked about being booed last night. "Then don't come to the game," Greene said according to quotes on the Fox Sports Midwest web site. "Just cheer for your team. That's all I can say about that."

* Tyler Greene telling fans not to come to the game? (The writer pauses to shake his head.) I don't know what else can be said about this. You can get mad at Greene, or you can get mad at the people in charge who refuse to stop the fight, and put an end to the bleeding. With injuries to Rafael Furcal and Skip Schumaker, manager Matheny had no choice but to play Greene on Wednesday. More mayhem ensued. Greene is almost 29, so he isn't a puppy. I don't see a transformation coming. If this is Greene's last chance with the Cardinals, there isn't much time left. The rosters will expand in September. I wouldn't imagine we'd see much more of him from this point on. Then again, considering that Mozeliak and Matheny have carried Greene on scholarship this far, who the heck knows? If these guys want to play shorthanded by having Greene take up a spot on the 25-man roster, then it's on them -- and not the player.

If you watched the game today you would have sworn the didnt just tell the fans not to show up.  They briefly mentioned some frustrated comments.  It looked like the fans took his advice however.  There was nobody there.

Re: 8/8 GC vs. Giants

The Cardinals have not yet announced the corresponding roster move that will add a player to their 25-man roster, but it’s likely the Cardinals will pluck a middle infielder out of Triple-A.  Ryan Jackson, Pete Kozma and Eugenio Velez would all seem to be options.

Re: 8/8 GC vs. Giants

One bad thing about Jackson is he is coming into the league after his worst month of the year.
