Cardinals re-sign Westbrook for 2013

per Twitter, it appears they simply exercised the $8.5M option and added a mutual 2014 option

http://www.stltoday.com/sports/baseball/professional/cardinal-beat/westbrook-cards-agree-to-contract-extension/article_dd10e930-ebd3-11e1-873a-0019bb30f31a.html

I wonder if this is any indication that they know something bad about Carpenter.  It would seem very unlike the Cardinals to take a preventive approach.  If Carpenter is healthy, the rotation is pretty much set.  Rosenthal, Kelly and Miller would all be blocked.

Now under contract for 2013

Wainwright
Garcia
Westbrook
Lynn
Carpenter???

You know Carp isnt a sure thing and that has to factor into the thinking.  Id say the FO want to stay out of the bidding for a starter.  By locking Westbrook up now they advoid the pressure of adding top of the rotation pitching.  The fall back option is Kelly.  I am sure Loshe has pitched his way off the Cardinals list of options.  Westbrook is a short term easy fix.

Yeah, this is pretty much an indication that they won't re-sign Lohse, and makes me think they think we've seen the last of Carpenter. Not a bad way to go out, the winning pitcher in Game 7 of a World Series and all.

I still wish Carp would consider spending time in the bullpen.  Sounds like he is good to have around and I think a role with less innings could extend his career.

I have no doubt that Lohse's days in St. Louis are numbered.  I'm just worried about what this means for Carpenter.  With all the emphasis this team has been placing on developing from within, it just strikes me as not keeping with their normal approach to go into 2013 with 5 starters pretty much pre-determined.  Especially with Rosenthal, Kelly and Miller all sort of knocking at the door.

Mind you, I'm not saying it's a foolish approach.  This team seems to always have to deal with a significant injury in the rotation, and it will be nice if they actually went into the season with 5 established starters and a tested 6th guy waiting in the wings.  All I'm saying is that if they still plan on Carpenter being a part of the 2013 rotation, they will have a surprising level of depth at starting pitcher.
