I can't do the "Why can't the Cardinals hit Bud Norris?" thing tonight. I just can't.

Re: 8/22 GC vs. Houston

I have a feeling this game is going to end either with the Cards winning 9-2 or the Astros winning 4-3.

Hope you're wrong. I'm not feeling a 6 run 8th inning.

Re: 8/22 GC vs. Houston

There's been a lot written about the inconsistency of the offense, but honestly, they score 0-3 runs as much as everyone else. My problem isn't so much with that as it is games like last night where Bud Norris only gives up three runs because of a wild pitch, despite the fact that Bud Norris sucks ass.

Last Friday, James McDonald entered that game having given up four or more runs six times in 10 starts. He proceeds to shut the Cardinals down. He got hammered in San Diego yesterday.

Jeff Karstens is awful on the road, but he basically breezed through the lineup.

Barry Zito had one of the worst walk rates in all of baseball. Five days earlier the Mets(!) tore him apart. Well, he waltzes into Busch Stadium and throws 6.2 innings, walks none and gives up two runs. Then the Rockies assaulted him at SBC or whatever they call it, then the Padres did it again on Saturday.

Go back to August 2 at Colorado. The Rockies call up Alex White, who had been brutal. What happens? He somehow escapes the four inning threshold and throws 5.1 solid innings. Since then he's thrown 4 mediocre four inning starts.

And so it goes. I know there's a lot of random variation in baseball, but I don't think that a starter who is on a streak of being terrible, magically turns it around against the Cardinals, then sucks in his next start is random.

So to what do you ascribe this maddening lack of consistency? It used to be that salad-tossing lefties shut them down, but they're clobbering lefties this year.
