Let not ignore this any longer

I believe this hit the nail on the head

"With one more win he catches Greg Maddux at 355. With a single pitch he ducks a Hall of Fame ballot that includes Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa. "

Also enjoyed the shots at the Astros

"And good for the Astros for promising to show up when Clemens pitches again on Friday, because, Lord knows, neither had anything to do that day anyway."

"Something like, oh, the Astros gutting themselves into what amounts to a scheduled forfeit and how 14 of their 27 remaining games are likely to impact playoff races. Or for the Milwaukee Brewers, who lost back-to-back games to the Astros three weeks ago, amounting to the Astros’ only winning streak since June."

"We know their team stinks. ........ And we know that very few people come to their ballpark, and those who do can’t possibly expect to go home pleased. "

"There’s nothing at stake here. Not a game, not a pennant race, not a legacy. There’s not even anything cheap about it. Seen the Astros’ second-half ERA? It’s 5.16. Clemens could come back pushing a walker at 65 and not foul that up. The spirit of competition? The purity of the pennant races? The Astros have won nine games since the All-Star break. Nine. "

Or just a shot at the prospect hypers:

"We know their first draft was celebrated by those who celebrate drafts. "

Re: Let not ignore this any longer

Good article with some great observations, as you highlighted. But for some reason my eyes focused on this statement:
"And maybe we’re all supposed to be amazed that a man who just spent five years defending himself against allegations of steroids and growth hormone use can, at 50, still throw a baseball 88 mph."

A nice dig, but I personally couldn't hit anywhere near 88 in the absolute prime of my life whereas Clemens was consistently mid-to-upper 90s during his. So, without meaning to take Clemens' side on the steroid issue, I think you have to give nature some of the credit for this.

Re: Let not ignore this any longer

Yet another desperate attempt by perhaps the shallowest person on the planet to satisfy his constant desire for attention.
Go away, Roger.

Wow.  I really thought it would be a while before I would loathe someone in retirement more than I loathed Brett Favre.  Silly me to not realize that in a world of self-absorbed athletes, the next one was simply right around the corner.

Re: Let not ignore this any longer

I've said it before, but Clemens is nothing more than a roided up turd.

As for the Astros, there's a lot of amnesia going on here. People seem to forget that when they had real players like Barmes, Bourn, Lee, Quintero, Wandy, Myers, Happ, etc. a year ago they had 30 wins at the All-Star break. They were playing at a .333 clip. Why was it more competitive to run sucky, over-the-hill veterans out there every day to lose 106 games, but it's not competitive to run sucky, Triple-A players to lose 115 games?
