9/24 CG

The Nashnils put up six in the bottom of the fourth and lead Milwaukee, 7-1.

I'm guessing that ends well.

Re: 9/24 CG

Lynn's first 25 pitches are fastballs, and his 26th pitch is a curve that breaks about three feet. You wonder if anyone thinks about this stuff.

Ironic, because Davey Johnson's face kind of looks like a rat's ass.

Rec.

La Russa probably threw up when he read this. Maybe it's the absence, but I've grown fond of the crazy bastard since he walked away. Even when the Cardinals were on their way to 105 wins he was still trotting out Pujols, Edmonds, Renteria, Rolen, Sanders and Walker in the last week of the season. My guess it that the reasons were twofold: he wanted to keep the troops sharp (they blew up Los Angeles and Houston's pitching staffs) and he considered it disrespectful to the game not to try and win. There's no conclusive evidence, but I just wouldn't want my players going into the playoffs having less than 10 at-bats in the last week of the regular season.

That said, I'm glad Johnson is resting his guys because it'll make the Cardinals' chances of sneaking in that much easier. Sit them all, Davey.

Re: 9/24 CG

I think I played in a summer league with a guy named Fernando Rodriguez. That guy was better than this guy. This guy is like the mechanical arm at the batting cage where you put a quarter in the slot and it throws you a half-dozen perfectly straight fastballs at the exact same speed.

"Sit them all, Davey."

The only problem I foresee is if the Nashnils completely tank and end up behind the Braves. Unless the Cardinals trade for Justin Verlander between now and the end of the season, they don't match up favorably with Gio Gonzalez in a 1-game playoff.

Haven't they clinched the division already?

Molina is the NL MVP.

They've clinched a playoff berth. They're something like five games in front of Atlanta.
The Giants and TTTIB have clinched their respective divisions.

Brownie and J.D. have identified starting pitching as the Astros' greatest need this off-season. That's sort of like saying the North Pole could use a couple of tanning salons. Sure, but what's the point?

Re: 9/24 CG

Allowing three runs on two tape-measure home runs, including one by a scrawny middle infielder who spent most of the year in the minors, in 4 1/3 innings apparently qualifies as "a good job in relief" in Astroland these days.

Sounds about right.

I'll probably jinx it, but the Cardinals are nine outs away from winning seven of eight. Maybe it's just me, but this feels like the worst winning stretch I can remember.

Oh good, they were attempting a bunt with their .300 hitting outfielder again. God I despise Matheny.

Re: 9/24 CG

Sure, play the infield in down by five. The Astros are going to win this one, 7-6.
