Can't wait to hit the Reds' board to read Danny's indignation about how Votto got screwed.

"P Bronson Arroyo Reds"

This seems suprising to me.

Re: Award Season

Only two positions not from the Central Division.  Damn, we must be like the toughest division in the Conference.

I think the pitching provides more opportunities for Comedy Central players to demonstrate their skills.

I'm sure having Molina and Phillips in the same dugout would at least be entertaining.

I'd rather see Phillips and Zambrano in the same dugout.

Speaking of Comedy Central, I am apparently unable to divide nine players into two categories correctly.  There are THREE non Central Division players on that list.]

Not likely, Web.  But based on what I have been reading, here is a glimpse of what might be Mozeliak's Plan A for next year:

RF Allen Craig / Jon Jay [R/L platoon]
SS Stephen Drew L
1B Albert Pujols R
LF Matt Holliday R
CF Colby Rasmus L
3B David Freese R
C Yadier Molina R
P Carpenter/Wainwright/Garcia/Westbrook/Lohse
2B Skip Schumaker L

But, FWIW, if they were going to do a deal with D-backs, I would prefer they go after Kelly Johnson and leave Ryan to play SS.  I suppose one thought might be that Johnson would command a higher preice, in terms of trade value, and Skip probably has less trade value than Ryan.

Re: Award Season

I think there are other arguments re: Drew v. Johnson.  Johnson is coming off of a career year--one that he has never come even close to in the past.  I suspect anyone who trades for Johnson is going to pay for his 2010 stats, which means that team will likely significantly overpay.

Also, Drew is only in his 2nd year of arbitration eligibility.  Johnson is in his 3rd, meaning he's a free agent after 2011.  In that sense, you could be significantly overpaying for a one year rental.

On the other hand, Johnson is not represented by Boras (Drew is).  As such, you might be able to get a new deal done with Johnson before he reaches free agency.

One other fact that receives little mention is that the Cardinal staff is pretty familiar with Steven Drew.  Apparently he hung around the team quite a bit when J.D. was here.  Larussa and his people seem to like Steven quite a bit.

Good points.

Now that TK has pulled my head out of my ass for me regarding Uggla, he is more interesting than either.  Is he still controlled for two more years?

I gotta say I am very reluctant to see them trade Ryan.  This is a guy who, with the right coaching staff seems poised to win the Gold Glove at SS for the next 10-15 years.  Well, he's 28 years old now, so realistically for the next 5-7 years.  At least let him win one GG for us, develop some trade value, and get something good for him.  It sounds like the speculations of an offer to AZ are based around one of our BP pitchers of demonstrated value, like Boggs or Motte, with Ryan to replace Drew and Jay as a toss in.  But the value is the pitcher, not Ryan.

Up to this point La Russa's penchant for hard working players with limited talent, like taguchi, Miles, Schumaker, etc. has been more of a curiosity than an irritant to me.  But if this results in the forced trade of Ryan, and Ryan goes on to win a handful of Gold Gloves, or maybe much more, then it will move into the realm of 'irritating' and beyond.

Between Ryan and Schu, they are focusing on replacing the wrong guy.

Re: Award Season

They could use Drew and Johnson for different reasons.  Johnson offers power and production and Drew offers a solid lead off man.  I think both play hard and would add some gritt to the team.

What I would do is trade for Drew and sign Eck.  David would offer a emergency backup at SS and give them someone who can play second when a left hits.  I think Eck could use alittle less playing time and I think Skip will find enough work in the outfield.  Eck and Drew also gives the team two guys who can handle leadoff, three if you want to count Skip.

Re: Award Season

Drew's OBP was .352 last year and is .332 lifetime.  I don't know how that compares in the league today, but a few years ago those would not have been leadoff-type numbers.  Also, he had 10 SB and 5 CS, so there is no speed worth mentioning.

Without looking I believe he was one of the best leadoff men OBP wise.  When Eck was a Cardinal his OBP was in the .350 range and he was not a stealer.  Drew is a present day Eckstein.  He strikes out more but he has more power and RBIs.  If he is the SS for 2011 I will be happy.

Re: Award Season

Leadoff hitters are never league leaders in OBP even though you want a high OPB guy in that position.  Pitchers will not want to ever walk to leadoff man because of the people batting behind him.

Fors posted  a lineup with batting second and I believe he is on to something.  Drew has some power and we all know TLR likes power in his 2 hole (thats a pop fly boys).  If they signed Eck and batted him leadoff TLR could go with his RLR deal.  If Skip returns to his normal self he could hold the leadoff spot down again.  I dont think you can go into 2011 as Skip as the only option.

2b Skip/Eck
SS Drew
1b Pujols
LF Holliday
CF Rasmus
3b Freese
C Molina
RF Jay/Craig

This would also be the cheapest option and hopefull would allow them to upgrade the Jay/Craig platoon.

Re: Award Season

What makes this option cheaper, and cheaper than what?

Last year Ryan made $425k and Schu made $2 million, not that it makes a difference to TLR's thinking.

From what I am reading TLR wants keep Schu as a starter, wants a new starter at SS, and wants a veteran who can play 3B and SS (think Tejada) figuring that a back up for Freese is more important than a backup for Schu.

Re: Award Season

Drew would be about the cheapest guy we could find to replace Ryan and Eck would be cheaper then Hudson.

Pujols, Holliday, Tulowitzki & Carlos Gonzales get the "Silver Slugger" award:-)  Very deserving all the way around IMHO (happy)

There's a reason Eckstein is cheaper than Hudson. His numbers have been pretty bad since leaving St. Louis. I know people love nostalgia, but I want to see Eckstein at 2nd base about as much as I want to see Matt Morris return to the rotation.

I want to wait and see if this "Renteria, Ryan, and Schu + baked mostacholi for Ramirez and Uggla" gains any traction.

I figured that either we get a real second baseman or SS, not both.  If they do get Drew it is likely going to be Mies and Skip at second.  I would like Eck more than that.
