I'm not an expert by any means, but I'd think you at least have to be on the major league roster or the DL as of Sept. 1. This is admittedly a far-fetched example, but if you could add anyone you have under contract, what's to prevent the Cardinals from trading for Andrew McCutchen this afternoon and putting him in the outfield tonight?
I don't believe Shelby Miller satisfied either of those criteria.
But I like your example. Lets trade for McCutcheon.Maybe it's the 40-man, then. TK is probably the guy who can answer your question. Reading the roster regulations, especially about the waiver process, gives me a popsicle headache.
What do you think the Pirates would take? Something involving Westbrook would probably require the Jedi Mind Trick.

We could agree to throw in Ryan Jackson and Bryan Anderson.

Craig isn't hitting, but that doesn't necessarily mean he ought to be coming out. The real problem was Mujica. I think they've sensed a pattern that he's either really good, or he just flat out sucks. Sandoval hit a laser and Mujica got pretty lucky Posey didn't do more with the pitch he hit for a single.
Matheny is becoming slow to adjust if you ask me. Mujica is getting hit harder then any regularly used bullpen pitcher. Rosenthal and Kelly are throwing shutout ball in there 10.1 innings of post season work.

I have no idea what the rules are. I found the story from the P-D when Miller was promoted. They had to add him to the 40 man roster to promote him, but it doesn't appear that happened until September 4.
Obviously, I hope Beltran's injury isn't that severe, but with Carpenter having to join the lineup, the bench just became comically thin.

Said on ESPN that Beltran texted the post dispatch say he hoped to play but was really sore. Listed as day-to-day.

I know to be called up to the big league you have to be on the 40 man. Player are still considered on the 40 if they are on 15 day DL but not counted if on the 60 day DL. I am not sure what qualifies a player for the post season roster.

Mujica struck out the only three batters he faced in Game 1 which was the last time he pitched. Tough to blame Matheny for going back to him last night.

True, he has his best outing of the post season in game one of this series. Still previously he had a couple of rough outing against Washington and the Braves. If I was Matheny I wouldnt be to trusting.

To be eligible for a team’s playoff roster a player must be on any of the following: (a) the 25 man active roster, (b) the disabled list, (c) the bereavement list, or (d) the suspended list as of August 31 at midnight[citation needed]. The only exception is that a player who is on the disabled list at the end of the regular season may be replaced on the postseason roster by any other player who was in the organization on August 31, with the approval of the commissioner of baseball.[1]

I haven't seen enough of Jackson to make a determination, but supposedly he's got plus defensive skills, and his offensive numbers the last two seasons are decent. And he's only 22.

When the Cardinals acquired Mujica, wasn't there something written about him suggesting there's a quirky statistic that shows he's not effective every other day, or every third day, or partly cloudy days, or Monday holidays, or some weird dynamic?

Perhaps the weird dynamic of a Latin ballplayer rocking Matt Clement's Amish beard?
Maybe he's come down with tendinitis from churning too much butter?

There must be an extension of that exception for players who become disabled in the post-season. The Cardinals were able to remove Garcia from the post-season roster and replace him with Miller, who was not on the 40 man roster as of August 31, but who was obviously within the organization. I also remember reading something about the Reds needing the commissioner's approval to replace Cueto.
So, in theory, if it came to it, the Cardinal probably could replace Beltran with Tavares. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

Not saying that Matheny is similar to Larussa, but I think the last time I saw Jackson was on the side of a milk carton. I'm not sure what Jackson did to piss off Matheny, but his future may be with another manager.

Yeah, it's odd. Most of what's been was reported was how Jackson had superseded Koz, then Koz was moved to second base, but when they were both called up to St. Louis, Koz ended up being the regular shortstop when Furcal got hurt.
And you're right. There wasn't any sort of platoon (though they both hit from the right side). Koz played every day, and Jackson just disappeared.

The only thing I've read and heard is once you take a guy off the playoff roster due to injury, he has to miss the next round as well. Cueto wouldn't have been able to pitch in the LCS once he backed out of the division series.
Of course, there's the theory if the Reds had tried to put him back on for the World Series, he probably would have come up with some sort of limp-wristed excuse like a moderate case of athlete's foot or a developing yeast infection.

Correct, meaning the only way they would replace Beltran was if they knew he couldn't be available for the World Series.

I didn't follow the roster changes, but it might have been that Garcia (or perhaps someone else? Westbrook?) was replaced at the end of the season to make room for Miller, as the rule states. If it was the case that Garcia did not come off the 25 man roster at that time, it's not really clear if the "replaced" player has to be taken off the 25 man roster at that time.

I believe the club had to indeed make room for Miller on the 40 man but I think they outright some guy i never heard of before and didnt even know was on the 40 man. It wasnt Garcia or Westbrook because they were never put on the 60 day DL.

It definitely wasn't Garcia since he was on the roster in the LDS. Not sure if Westbrook ever saw the DL since most teams don't use it in September with the expanded rosters already available.
Offline
Westbrook is not on the 25 man roster now, and there is an injury report for him in September, though I don't know if he went on the DL.
Offline
The Cardinals remove Jaime Garcia from the playoff roster, add Shelby Miller

Oh, sorry. I knew that Max. I thought you meant during the regular season.
But that still doesn't explain why they could make that move. Here's the rule you posted earlier.
"To be eligible for a team’s playoff roster a player must be on any of the following: (a) the 25 man active roster, (b) the disabled list, (c) the bereavement list, or (d) the suspended list as of August 31 at midnight[citation needed]. Miller wasn't on the 25 man roster on August 31, nor was he on the disabled, bereavement or suspended lists. He wasn't even on the 40 man roster on August 31.
The item you posted doesn't explain how a player who wasn't even on the 40 man roster on August 31 is eligible for postseason. I'm sure the easy answer is that if an active player is disabled you can replace him with anyone in the organization. I just haven't been able to find a rule which says that.

Crap power just went out. Fortunately it lasted long enough to see the triple by Molina that he managed to turn into a double. Next thing I saw was the last word of Wainwright's post-game interview.
