Re: NLCS Game 4 GC

If memory serves correct wasn't that St. Louis getting stomped by the Braves after jumping up 3-1?

(looking it up)

Yep. Sigh, you bastard, I had nearly filed that away into the realms of "never think about it again". Back to therapy.

The worst part was Bobby Cox predicting after they lost Game 4 the Braves would still win the series because they had Glavine, Smoltz and Maddux going in the final three games.
On second thought, the worst part was Donovan Osborne shitting himself on the mound in the first inning of Game 7, but you get the idea.

Re: NLCS Game 4 GC

They were talking about it on 590 this morning how Mazzone has told the story before that the Braves were laughing at the Cardinals for getting giddy after they rallied to win Game 4.

St. Louis got outscored 32-1 in those last three games and the aforementioned Donovan Osborne start really topped it off nicely.

They were only down 6-0.  They had the Braves right where they wanted them.

Re: NLCS Game 4 GC

My paranoid concern:

Public opinion and common wisdom being what it is, Zito has this chance to make himself appear fully worthy of $126 million dollars and make the people who signed him seem like under-appreciated geniuses for having done so--no matter how irrational it is to assess a seven year contract based upon one game, but that's what is happening.  Just google <barry zito contract> and see how many different writers are covering this angle.  Baseball loves a good story, and if karma is on the side of Zito and the guy who signed him, he's gonna come out and pitch a gem.

"the Braves were laughing at the Cardinals for getting giddy after they rallied to win Game 4."

I don't remember the players getting particularly over-confident, but the fans were going ballistic. There were about 50,000 people in the stands mocking the tomahawk chop.

Re: NLCS Game 4 GC

And that's one of the reasons why the Braves of the '90s were considered such loathesome creatures. For all their arrogance, they won as many WS titles in the '90s as the Marlins, and the Braves were in two of them before the Marlins even started playing baseball games.

"One of".  Another reason that they were so loathsome was that by '96, Glavine and Maddux were location pitchers who both benefitted from designer strike zones from the umps that made almost anything a strike as long as the ump decided that Gladdux had hit the spot he was aiming for.

There's that. There's also the offensive chop thing. Jock Rocker. Bobby Cox beating his wife. John Rocker. Chipper Jones dropping his pants in every National League city. John Rocker. TBS dubbing them "America's Team." John Rocker. The crummy fans who can't even generate enough enthusiasm to sell out a playoff game. John Rocker.

I vaguely remember someone - either Brian Jordan or Dmitri Young - pissing them off with a comment.

Of those two, it was more likely Jordan. The Cardinals couldn't wait to be rid of him because he was such a deleterious influence in the clubhouse. And he ended up signing with the Braves.
