Strauss doesn't say it, but the way it is written would get people thinking. Frankly, unless this is meant as a 3-way deal, I think this is close to impossible for the Cardinals, from a cost point of view, trading two guys who make less than a million combined for two guys who make nearly $30 million combined. Otherwise, no surprises. The front office's game plan is set.
Change at:
SS: likely
RF: possible but not the highest priority
2B: unlikely
CF: very unlikely
closer: no interest whatsoever
Keep Westbrook: a toss-up, but one that won't go into December
Add Back-up: left side of infield
LHP: only if resources remain after fixing other problems

If this ridiculous and asinine insistence that Schumaker be the second baseman actually comes to pass in April, I'm off the Tonywagon. The ass backwards management from the front office to the grump in the dugout will cost this team next season. Bank on it.

Also, if Schumaker IS at second base, that's on Mozeliak. Yeah, Tony's a dipshit for favoring the type of player Schumaker is rather than the player he actually is, but Mozeliak is Tony's boss and he gets final say on personnel. So either Mozeliak has no balls or he actually agrees with Tony.
Take your pick.

Because you've been such a strong supporter of La Russa up to this point?
The points you make about the relationship between Moz and La Russa are fair, on paper, but not in practice, I think. The same thing shows up when a rookie coach is hired to coach a future Hall of Famer, think Phil Jackson and Michael Jordan. It took a long time for Jackson to exercise real authority within the Bulls.
But what makes the whole thing more interesting is that Strauss identifies Mozeliak as a Ryan supporter, and La Russa+coaches are the Schumaker supporters. So, in this case I am with you, and against La Russa. But in the end it will all probably come down to what's available. If they suddenly get a shot to sign Uggla I'll bet La Russa would find some flexibility in his position.

If they traded for Reyes I would puke, eat it and puke again. I think Beltran would do nothing to help the uptight clubhouse.
I would sign Danny Bonaduce to play second. He cant be much worst then Skip was in 2010 and he would liven things up a bit.

Disgusting, but absolutely rec-worthy

Aye. I don't think there's a word that's been invented yet to describe how much I hate Jose Reyes. Maybe "despisetestaloathitate?"

SS: likely -- God I fucking hope so.
RF: possible but not the highest priority -- So Winn wasn't the answer we all thought he'd be? Shocking. Honestly, keeping Ludwick wasn't the answer either.
2B: unlikely -- Sigh, Skip may not be the cancer that Ryan is, but you'd be hard pressed to see the difference between them at the plate. Just saying.
CF: very unlikely -- Rasmus had a year I can deal with, and although I didn't like his ballerina act, he did clear everything up and put his head down to play when it became a media storm. I'm not sold on the fact that he's garbage, although I'd rather have someone I feel better about in CF.
closer: no interest whatsoever -- Franklin better find some gas, or Motte better learn how to pitch then. Just saying.
Keep Westbrook: a toss-up, but one that won't go into December -- I don't mind keeping West, he didn't do badly.
Add Back-up: left side of infield -- So we need a SS, not a 2B, but we need a backup there? =/
LHP: only if resources remain after fixing other problems -- Agree. You can't fix it all.
All in all, I'd like to see the team making some moves, I honestly do care what they are, but I'd rather see bad moves then no moves at this point. One sends the message everything is fine, and it's fucking not. The other just means you're picking the wrong guys, but at least understand enough to know that what you have is an issue.
Re-sign Pujols, if you don't do this, nothing else matters because I will no longer be a Cardinals fan.

Beltran will be a month shy of 34 next Opening Day and has played 144 games the past two seasons. He's also going to be paid something like $20 million.
So yeah, I'd still take Rasmus over him and not think twice about it.

"is there really any question that this would be a better team with Reyes & Beltran than with Corny & Corby?"
No, but at least you know you're going to get 140 games apiece out of the latter combination. Beltran is like a Porsche that keeps breaking down, and Reyes becomes a much less valuable player as he ages. I think he's already lost a step, and he's not going to get any faster.

If they trade for a SS like Drew it is going to cost us something. I dont think they can keep emptying the system like they over the last two years. I would rather see them take a chance on JJ Hardy but I have no clue what kind of market he has.
