Starting their quest for the 2013 World Series early, the Cubs make a splash in the free agency market and sign Scott Baker to a 1 year, $5.5M contract, plus incentives.

My first thought was Jeffrey Loria should be indicted for fraud. My second thought is God must like Albert Pujols more than Jose Reyes.

This really isn't a bad sign. Of course, it would be better if they had planned on Baker to be their #5 starter instead of a top/middle of the rotation guy.

That's ridiculous. If MLB can take over the Dodgers, they can do something about this affront.

I think we ought to start a "Free Giancarlo" petition. He'd look OK in Cardinal red ...

The real issue here isn't Jeffrey Loria's malfeasance in hemorrhaging the roster; it's the morons in Miami-Dade County who allowed Loria and MLB to get their way on public funding. They should've slapped it down and never even allowed a debate.
Public funding for stadiums must end.

True, there's a caveat emptor quality to this shenanigan, but it's dwarfed by Loria's unrepentant malice. This is duplicitousness of the Bernie Madoff/Anna Nicole Smith/Enron variety.

"MLB then refused to allow the Expos any September call-ups, leaving them wildly short-handed compared to their opponents and exacerbating their fade. "
Did that really happen? and how so?

Yes. MLB was running the team. It made all personnel decisions.

The Expos were effectively wards of the league, AP. Selig called all the shots. And remember, this was at a time when his family owned the Brewers, who were presumably competing for a wild card spot in the same league.
One of the worst parts was what they did to Frank Robinson. They chucked him out of his office and told him if he still wanted a job, he was going to manage the Expos. Robby was a great player, but only so-so in his managerial prime, and he was a disaster as a manager in Montreal and later Washington when he was in his 70s. There's a clip of him falling asleep in the dugout during a game. Seriously.

For sure, but something I read earlier basically described what Loria is doing as the endgame of 20 years of Bud Selig's policies, which is to use the respective cities as an ATM. I'm no longer surprised at this stuff because it's exactly what Selig wanted to see.

I think you're giving Bud too much credit for intelligence and a vision. Baseball and Miami ought to go together like peanut butter and jelly. Only the combination a coward like Selig and a sociopath like Loria could screw it up. And in spite of a haplessly dim owner followed by an historically-avaricious one, it's not like the Marlins have been without success. They've won two more championships than the Cubs in the last 100 years. They should be drawing 30K-40K fans a game. Next year, they're going to be lucky to draw 1 million fans to watch Stanton and bunch of minor leaguers.

Well surely Loria didnt actually believe that a new ballpark and a couple of big free agent singings and he was going to make up for years of putting a poor team on the field. Fan bases are not bought in one season.

I wonder if Colby's going to have a job with Toronto in 2013?

I was listening to the baseball channel on the XM yesterday and part of the discussion was that the Jays are under the belief he's a platoon player because he hasn't hit lefties well enough since he's been in Toronto.

He hasnt hit righties that great either.
The Blue Jays are making some waves.

Yankees re-sign Kuroda, 1 year/$15M
Jeremy Guthrie gets 3/$25M from the Royals
And Babe LeHair gets DFA'd by the Cubs so he can sign with a Japanese team. From the 2012 All-Star Team to the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks in less than a year. It's a good thing he hit .850 with 12 HR against the Cardinals. He might have ended up in a slow-pitch softball league.

"Fukuoka"
Is this the name of a city or a term you use when you're trying to solicit a Geisha?

ROR! And if you offer too little money you may hear "Nagasaki".
