Yes, shapely.
Coincidentally, a facebook friend posted something about Tough Mudders, and the photos looked a bit like that.

True, untill he started doing gods work.

First off, I only tabulate that opinion up til the end of the 2011 season. After that it was going to get ugly, a train wreck in excruciating slow motion.
The "God's work" stuff was hard to listen to, but I hate that stuff from anybody. I don't think it means that people who talk like that are not necessarily humble, it's just a result of having a weird world view that about 80% of humanity possesses. It's like claiming that a rape baby is God's will. Like, WTF? But a lot of people think like that.

I thought the female body had a way to shut down its womb in the event of rape.

Only "legitimate" rapes.

Somewhere in all that I hear "a lesson on Greek Philosophy by right wing lunatics"
Fate: Your rape baby is God's will.
Free choice: Your rape baby is proof that it was not legitimate rape, thus your rape baby was the result of your free choice to enjoy the rape.

Garcia threw from a mound today and reported no discomfort. Team states that surgery won't be necessary and that Garcia is expected to be able to participate in a normal off-season workout
Cardinal-speak to English translation: Garcia returns after the 2014 All-Star Break.
In other news, the Cardinals formally released Kyle McClellan.

rec.
yeah, i'm really quite curious about what's going on here. isn't he extended already? why not get the surgery now and work your way back into contention in time for the next contract?

"the Cardinals formally released Kyle McClellan."
That's a shame. He may have a couple of capable seasons left in that arm for someone's bullpen, but I have a feeling he's going to be doing the Rick White Shuffle for the rest of his career - bouncing around from team to team with the occasional moderate success but more often than not used in situations to save the arm of someone more important.

Your mistake is ascribing logic to a situation involving the Cardinals' medical staff, Max.

Garcia is signed through 2015. That isn't the issue. I suspect the issue is that we're talking about his shoulder. Pitchers have elbow surgery all the time and the success rate is fairly high. The success rate following shoulder surgery is much, much lower. Labrum surgery ended Mulder's career at 29.
Here's a pretty good article primarily talking about Erik Bedard, but also covering the difficulty with recovering from this surgery.
Mark Prior was another name among those who never recovered from labrum surgery. Ended his career at 25.
I can see why Garcia would want surgery to be an option of last resort.

ahh . . . I see. I suppose it's worth seeing if he can rest and return to form then. On the other hand, there is an impressive list of pitchers who had the surgery and prospered. Given 2012, my hunch is that it will be similar, but a bit worse, and eventually they'll have to operate and he either gets better or doesn't. Too bad. I was rooting for him.

Yeah, I don't think frayed labrums magically heal. It's just a matter of time.

I am trying not to just think badly of every injury a Cardinals player gets but the story the PD has up is troubling.
First off Furcal wasnt that good in 2012. He had a really good first month and then fell of a cliff, burst in to flames and then drown in a river.
Secondly, so what, Garcia threw off the mound. I know they have plenty of other guys to attempt to fill his shoes and they are not going shopping for starting pitching. Still how many times did they tell us Mulder had a positive side session?
Offline
I see Furcal as a cross between Adam Kennedy and Lance Berkman. A) they paid the money and they are going to trot him out there. This team does not eat Adam Kennedy sized mistakes. B) His body is a bit creaky for the position they have him slotted for. They traded defense for offense, reliability for star-power. A and B together don't give me a lot of confidence, but the team won't trade real assets just to buy everyone a comfort zone.
Offline
This is goofy. Furcal's situation has got everything to do with his contract. If they had signed him to a 3-year deal last off-season, he would have had Tommy John in August.
Replacing a baseball player's UCL is the anatomical equivalent of a timing belt change these days. You can reasonably expect a player who has gone through Tommy John to at least resemble his former self within a year. That would have put Furcal on a timetable to return in August 2013 ... two months before his contract with the Cardinals expires.
A bum shoulder is entirely different. There are no guarantees. Look at Johan Santana. He's never going to be the same pitcher again. I understand their reticence to put Garcia under the knife, but unless they try Fors' suggestion and exhume Mr. Miyagi, surgery seems inevitable.

Would it have taken Furcal as long to recover as a pitcher?

"This team does not eat Adam Kennedy sized mistakes."
LMAO!!! You do remember that the team released Adam Kennedy before his contract expired, don't you?

Maybe someone with a better memory than mine can help out. I have a vague recollection that the reason Tony Womack came available in 2004 was either that he was still recovering from Tommy John surgery or that he was still rehabbing after not having the surgery and the Red Sox didn't think he'd be ready in time to start the season. I have some recollection that whatever Womack's situation, his recovery was much faster than expected. Anyone else remember or am I making this up?

Good question. I know the recovery period for a pitcher coming off TJ is supposed to be one calendar year, and two years before he reverts completely to pre-surgery form. I assume it might be shorter for a position player.
