Up yer Wazoo

Washington State might be the worst Pac 10/12 team I've ever seen. It was 32-0 at half, and 39-0 five minutes into the third quarter. So Graham sends out his second team offense. One of Washington State's linemen sacks the backup QB, and then starts celebrating. So Graham sends the first team offense back onto the field and ASU scores three plays later.

Go Cougs!

Since Western cut their football program I live in two-team country: Cougs and Dawgs.

Judging by yesterday's performance, Wazoo dropped football about two months ago.

Re: Up yer Wazoo

yeah.  I think the "Dawgs" suck, too--maybe they're still under penalty even--but I don't follow football around here at all.  Except high school, a bit.  We have a team in this county that won state for football and basketball and came within about an out of winning for baseball, too, last year.  In the end, that game slipped away in the 9th and they took second.  They also happen to be the local town with the reputation for broad lawns and narrow minds.  It must get under everyone else's craw to see this super-clean, goody-two shoes town be so successful.  I kind of like it though, Lynden, WA, it's a really nice place.  They're just a bit, er, traditional (not sure if it is illegal to mow your lawn on Sunday, but it simply is NOT done in any case . . . nothing happens on Sunday).

If you're referring to the Yoo Dub Huskies at the Dawgs, they're currently in the Top 25. Of course, they didn't have to play ASU this season, so they caught a break.

I think it was during your hiatus when I posted a link to a story in the local paper about my town's efforts to outlaw gasoline-powered leaf blowers. Not the handheld electric blowers that are typically used by residents. Those would have been OK. They were going after the spacepack units that are typically operated by the employees of commercial landscapers who live elsewhere.

Re: Up yer Wazoo

Yes, "Dawgs" are the Huskies.  It seems be to the in-group means of referencing them around here.  Yeah, I see now that with a 7-4 record they have cracked the Top 25.  Impressive.  I thought they were still under suspension.

I would go for banning leaf blowers.  But fwiw, Lynden is not the sort of town where commercial landscapers would have a chance.  It's not particularly affluent, it's just a well-manicured, heavily Lutheran, politically conservative, town, in the middle of an agricultural region.  I would be the sort of person who would deeply want to mock them if it weren't for the fact that it is genuinely a nice place. I also admired the way the town and citizens stood up to a local discount store, Fred Meyer (sort of an upscale Walmart).  "Freddie's" decided they wanted to put a store in the town (to get just that much closer to the Canadian border and the legions of Canadians who come here to buy cheap gas and milk), but they didn't want a location on the town's zoned strip for big retail.  They wanted a corner zoned for residential and small business.  The town stood its ground and its ground and Freddie's walked away from the deal.  End result: one nice little town preserved its character.

But back to sports: seriously impressive when one small town high school can win state for football, basketball, and come within an out of baseball.

"I thought they were still under suspension."

I don't know if they've been ineligible for anything substantial since Don James left. As Alz can attest, the problem with playing in the Pac 12 (or the SEC or pretty much any of the major conferences) these days is it's difficult to go through the conference schedule undefeated. The only two gimmes in the Pac 12 this year were Colorado and Wazoo. It's been a long time since the only game that mattered was the USC/UCLA game.

It didn't pass. As is the case in most seaside communities, strange stuff happens because you have a wide gulf between the people who live on the water and people who don't. We have townies and a very diminished congintent of fishermen in the interior, ringed by affluent people who moved here and live on the water.
The people in the million dollar homes with views of the ocean were getting upset their quiet was being disrupted by gas-powered blowers, as an aside almost universally operated by Central American immigrants who work for landscapers.
As soon as the ban proposal made it to town meeting, it was shot down by people who are used to raking their own leaves in the fall and didn't really care if the people who live on the water had their morning tennis matches disrupted by the blur of gas-powered leaf blowers.

That's really narrow-minded.  What about the unemployed people who simply want to sleep in, don't they deserve some peace from the leafblowers?

Particularly if they've been relegated to the cabana ...

"http://www.marbleheadneckrealestate.com … id=5826283"

I almost expected a photo bomb that had a homeless guy sleeping somewhere in the landscaping.

Frankly, I prefer mountain view to ocean view, if you have to choose one or the other.
