I base clicking on a story off of the headline not the author.  I often dont finish many of the columns wrote by Burwell, Gordon or Hummel.  The olny two writters I pay attention to because is Strauss and BM.  My opinion is the PD probably make the right call by promoting Strauss.  Just because he is trollish doesnt mean I dont read him and the point of a paper is to be read.

Goold is a better reporter and writes much more interesting pieces. And that Strauss *is* a troll is a pretty good reason to avoid the clicks.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one Tk.  Goold has a much greater understanding of the statistical metrics and he's undeniably more in tune with the Cardinals minor league system than Strauss, but I have seen little from Goold to suggest he's fostered any sort of relationships with any of the players/managers that allowed Strauss to provide the behind the scenes information that I've never seen from Goold.

Clearly it's just personal preference, but I'd rather read Strauss than Goold.

Re: Strauss Done As Cards Beatwriter

I think Strauss and Goold made a good complementary team, as BM and Gordon made a good complementary team.  I'm not surprised you enjoy Goold, TK, as he is a real statistics freak.  But to call him a better reporter is a tough call.  Strauss is a bona fide gumshoe when it comes to reporting.  Goold, by comparison, seems like the Paul DePodesta of reporting, trying to get it all done with numbers.

Anyway, sorry to hear it is all coming to an end.

I think this is by design. As Strauss has pointed out, Goold moves up to the No. 1 spot now that he's becoming a columnist. As I understood it, the No. 1 guy was in charge of providing the "Cardinals Insider" pieces. Plus, I'm not sure that Strauss has ever really provided any really good behind-the-scenes stuff anyway.

Like I replied to Fors, this is likely by design. Goold has been with the Cardinals for quite awhile; spends the same amount of time at the stadium and spends the same amount of time in Jupiter. Strauss was the paper's No. 1 Cardinals reporter, which meant he was assigned the bigger stories. Goold's assignment differed, but he still heard the same things that Strauss or anyone else heard during meetings with Mozeliak or Matheny. If he didn't write an article on Rasmus vs. La Russa, that's probably because it's Strauss' beat. You don't intrude on another reporter's beat like that.

Frot Strauss chat

"Brian Burwell will retain a weekly print presence but focus most of his efforts on the P-D's evolving video platform. You'll be hearing (and seeing) more soon. "

There's still zero chance I'll read anything Strauss writes in column-form

Interesting.  This sounds like Katie Couric and Ann Curry being shifted into new ventures.  "You'll be hearing less soon" is probably what they intend.

I will be interested to see how your opinions and hypotheses play out.  Your comment about Goold not intruding on Strauss's beat makes sense, but it is still up to Goold to demonstrate that he can do it as well as Strauss.  Similarly, Strauss still needs to demonstrate he can be a columnist.

So, just out of curiosity, how does Hummel fit in?  Sometimes he behaves like a reporter, sometimes like a columnist.  I would guess that he has seniority over Strauss to become a full-time columnist if wanted.
